Watch out for leather products. The foot dermatitis that I could not shake was from my shoes! Apparently chemicals used in tanning leather are so close or the same as nickel it was leaching to my foot by way of sweat. I had always suspected the new shoes the first time I ever had any dermatitis because it was on my feet. Then all the other sources kicked in masking it. After avoiding things to clear my feet and wits end again I decided to go all synthetic for shoe material. The symptoms cleared fairly quickly and now it shows up only when i am eating or touching things i know have some nickel. |

I too have been suffering similar symptoms. The drs thought I had pleurisy and when that was ruled out if was costochrondoritus. I was at the hospital 2 weeks ago and they said it was that and a virus combined. Now after doing a patch test I know for sure it's a nickle allergy! The coughing and phlegm. It gets so bad I get a sore tight chest. So I'm going on a strict nickle free diet but there is much conflicting info out there! I can only focus on how much I'll miss chocolate at mo! but every cloud has a silver lining, (tho better make mine a 24ct gold lining or I'll be allergic to good news too!), I'll lose weight and apparently people with nickle allergies are less likely to get cancer as our bodies are on high alert due to our wee cells fighting the nickle constantly! I would love to have some advice from anyone else who is going through the same!

After looking at all dietary info. online I think I have come up with a nickle free simple diet. Disclaimer though to people who may have other dietary allergies. What works for me may not work for you!
NICKLE FREE FOODS ALLOWED: meat, poultry, proper fish(not shellfish), eggs, milk, yoghurt, cheese, quark, butter, white bread without yeast, white rice, white sugar, white pasta. LITTLE PORTIONS OF: cauliflower, leeks, potatoes, spinach, fruit raw/stewed FOODS HIGH IN NICKLE: NO TINS OF FOOD OR CANS OF DRINKS. Green beans, broccoli, cabbage, peas, chocolate(all including drinking chocolate), liquorice, dried fuit and nuts, margarine, all wheat, grains, seeds, commercial salad dressings, NO TOMATOES, tea, beer, red wine. If you must drink tap water make sure tap runs for 2 minutes first. Some vitamins and medications contain nickle. Check with pharmacy or dr first! |

Hi! I am new here. I just found you today! I have a question. How do you replace what the grains give you?

I think I might have posted to your other post also.I have had an allergy to nickel since my teens. I am now 62 years young. For the last 20 years, I have had horrible gut pain. My intestines spasm into a tight knot. I also get migraines. Finally, two weeks ago an alternative doctor said that I had systemic nickel allergy syndrome. I have to eat nickel free. But the information out there is so inconsistent. I haven't eaten anything that appears on most lists and now I am feeling sickly. I too am feeling frustrated. I will check back with website to find out if anyone has learned anything.

So after 7 years and 10 severe allergic reactions and hospitalizations, I finally found the cause of my anaphylaxis and tongue swelling. I did a patch test and found that I'm allergic to nickel and gold. I had always known I had a nickel allergy because I couldn't wear nickel jewelry without getting rashing, but I never knew there were foods high in nickel, nor that the way things are stored and what they're cooked in increases these levels.
What was good was that I finally knew what was causing the reactions, and I had a list of foods and things to avoid, or so I thought. After researching several websites, I kept getting short lists and contradictory information. When I checked out this website, someone had recommended going to the FDA website and check out their research. I did that, found out the nickel levels of several hundred food items, and created a list of foods to eat, foods to only have once in a while in moderation, and food to avoid all together. One thing to keep in mind is that it's not always one food that you have to worry about. It's foods in combinations. For example, eating a few peppers may not send you into an allergic reaction, but combining it with refried beans on a tortilla with salsa, cooked in a pan that has stainless steel that contains nickel may send your body over the edge. Also, where the food is grown makes a difference. If there are high nickel levels in the soil, it leeches into the plants growing, and makes something that is usually harmless into something more deadly. So, to make a long posting short, I'm attaching the file in hopes that it may help other nickel sufferers find the information they need to keep safe. Last edited by Jomar; 11-03-2013 at 01:08 PM. I have been diagnosed with nickel allergy. My lips are red feel like pins and needles redness around the mouth. I am now doing a nickel free diet and have started eating with only plastic utensils. I don't have any other areas affected is jewelry is not the problem. I've had this for 4 mos but only diagnosed 7wks ago and nickel diet suggested 2 wks ago. How long should it take to subside?
I had a post and crown done but that was over a year ago?? |

First I have to say SO sorry to everyone dealing with this and those not receiving a diagnosis for several years - ugh! I am just a week into a nickel free diet and it's hard! Soybean oil is in everything, along with wheat (although one list my derm gave said whole wheat in moderation, but others I found say no??)...I'm used to eating granola bars for breakfast (no nuts or oats now), snack on crackers & almonds, salads and sandwiches for lunch (no lettuce or spinach, and no sandwich meat or tuna), so I need some ideas, please!
I'd like to not eat corn flakes every morning or pasta every lunch - too heavy. I do eat a lot of veggies and fruit but need more than that, of course. Thanks in advance for any ideas/recipes! Also, just a side note, I ate two dried apricots for the iron (which was not listed on my derm list), and I'm pretty sure that was the cause to a hive breakout the next morning. I researched nickel content in apricots - some lists had it down, along with dried fruits. Why dried fruits? The equipment used to dehydrate them? Yet, raisins are listed as ok on my derm list? |
