Default Mom in Edmond, (near Tulsa) Oklahoma needs support to make home g-f for 3 mos.

Hi all!

A nice mom figured out that she is gluten-sensitive-- in Edmond, Oklahoma (near Tulsa), and probably both her kids are too, but she's not getting any support from her children's pediatrician.

She needs both a good pediatrician who "gets" Dr. Kenneth Fine's work, and a good gastroenterologist, who also "gets" Dr. Fine's "EnteroLab" work, and she needs to correspond with folks in her area by email and phone, and IN PERSON (Edmond, OK, and also Tulsa, OK), who can give her moral support.

Her kids need to meet other kids who are already going gluten-free, so her kids won't feel like they are going to be suffering! Her 10 year old son was in tears, because "he loves his wheat", and he came out negative on Dr. Fine's testing. She and I suspect that the son is the one out of 500 truly gluten-sensitive people, who comes out "false negative" for gluten sensitivity on Dr. Fine's "EnteroLab" stool sample testing, due to his not making (any or enough) IgA antibodies!

She wants to make her home gluten-free for 3 months to see if this helps. She has already figured out that she herself is gluten-sensitive. Both her kids just did Dr. Fine's stool sample testing. One came out positive for gluten sensitive (the daughter), but son (as described above) came out "negative"---although Dr. Fine's interpretation did acknowledge that because the son has symptoms, that a 3 month trial of going gluten-free should be done.

The son is also probably milk protein-sensitive.

Anyone here in Edmond or Tulsa, Oklahoma?

Switching a childs menu is harder the older they are. I have worked with kids ages 13 and under for over 10 years and the number of children and whole familys going gluten free has grown over the last 3 years. In a church of 450 I had more gluten free kids than kids allergic to peanuts. I myself have been gluten free for over 3 years.
It was hard in the begaining but now there are so many good and wonderful products that make it so you aren't missing out. I recomend trying to keep their daily menu as close to normal as possible just without gluten. And get the good stuff, a PB&J needs to be on bread that is as close as possible to the norm. Betty Crocker now has a wonderful line of cake, cookie and brownie mixes that are all gluten free, and I promise you they ROCK!!
Next time the kids are going someplace where they are serving food-pizza and cookies, volunteer to bring some for your kids and some to share with the othe kids. Kids now days understand that people have allergies and if you dont make it a big deal and try to just replace and explane they do pretty well.
Sorry I dont live in OK or know any in the area who can be a close support.

Default Gluten free for anyone

Look who is the parent. If you believe that there is a problem then it is your responsibility to correct. That what you tell the child.

As for the reasons out of the 10 or so synpmtoms how many do the have. Thi s should have been why you feel they are gluten intolerant. That is what you use as you opening when you tell them why you are going to do this for 3 months. Also this is the down side to Celiacs.

It attacks the small intestine by damaging the little fibers that extract vitamins, minerals and nutrients. If you don't stop the damage you open yourself to many other diseases from Auto-ammune to other worse problems. If you continue you can litterly starve to death as your body would not get anything from the food you eat.

If this is not enough tell him to reseach Celiacs and associated desease that can be cause from malabsortion of nutrients.

I am a Tai Chi instructor and I have Celiacs and Myasthenia Gravis. I no longer eat any gluten products and rarely eat anything with any flour in it and I am 61 yrs old in good health.

If this doesn't change his mind and you believe there is something wrong then you have a choice wait until he says there is some wrong or stop buying the Gluten products. If he rebells and trys to get it somewhere else then so be it. At least you will have reduced the total intake.
