Wheat is one of the top eight food allergens~

This one also gives a bit of an overview about food allergy
http://www.epipen.com/causes_food.aspx

I have met a few people who have both wheat allergy and celiac disease. For the most part, it doesn't matter because in both cases you must avoid wheat. (also barley and rye for celiac disease) It matters only if you had a severe reaction to wheat... and this could potentially worsen over time.

If your mouth swells after eating wheat you should see an allergist and be tested for wheat (and potentially other) allergens. The itching/swelling sounds more like an IgE allergic response.

Swelling of the throat or difficulty breathing is reason to seek emergency care immediately. Any swelling on the face (eyes, lips) should probably be seen in urgent care when it's happening, unless you have other directions from your doctor.

I hope you will discuss this with your doctor...before it happens again.

My husband recently had an allergic reaction that involved swollen lips and swollen eyes, and intense itching, later hives. We took him to urgent care after Benedryl given at home wasn't working. The urgent care doctor sent him home (with stronger antihistimines/steroids) and told him to return to the ER if he had trouble breathing. By the next morning he was having trouble breathing. The ER nurse said ANY swelling on the face due to allergic reaction should be seen immediately. In fact, she told us next time to call 911!! She said reactions can happen/change quickly...and it isn't worth risking. They had just lost a young man to an allergic reaction the week before, on the ambulance ride in, so I think she was feeling particularly cautious.

I don't mean to alarm you or be overreactive... I just think it is important for you to see an allergist about this. They might decide you should carry an epi pen.

Hi Jen,

That's great news that you are feeling better! Keep up the good work staying gluten free!

DH confirmed for me that LCD flat panel screens are much better than the older CRT screens for less flicker and less electro-magnetic radiation.
