My mum is 69 and has had Alzheimers like symptoms for about 8 years. We started with GP's, the specialist physician and eventually neurologists and all concluded that she had Alzheimers. 4 weeks ago we took her to a neuro surgeon who diagnosed her with hydroencephalus and three weeks ago she had a shunt inserted. We have seen some improvement, but not major. She is still very confused, talks a lot about relative who have died and often thinks that she is not at home when she is. Do you think the operation was a failure - is it still early days. It's hard not to get discouraged - has anyone experienced this ???

I am not a neurologist, but I think some more time may show
more improvements. Everyone is different. You can try Googling "Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus outcomes" and see what you find.
