Hi all, i am new to the group. I was diagnosed with hydro and shunted at 6 mos of age. From the age of 6 mos and 16 yrs old, I had 11 revisions due to blockages, disconnections, kinks, short tubing........you name it, it failed. Don't get me wrong, I had far less problems than most and I thank God for that. I had a new, "fixed/ med. pressure" shunt installed in 1990 my last surgery was in '93 for a disconnection.
In the last 20 yrs, I married my high school sweetheart, we've had 2 children, and I started my career. A couple months ago, I started having an occassional sharp pain around my shunt, these pains increased in frequency. I started noticing frequent neck pains, occasionally being nausous. From somebody who never gets sick, I started taking notice. Then, I started having an occassional nagging headache and pain behind my eyes. My pediatric Dr retired and I had found a new n.s. in 2008 just in case. So, I called him on two different occassions to make an appt, both times he all but just came out and said he didn't have time to fool with me. On Jan. 21st, I woke up with one of those brain busting headaches. My wife, never having witnessed one of "those headaches" insisted I go to the ER. At the ER, I was told everything looked fine, written a prescript for pain pills and sent on my way. I got home and started making calls. I got an appt with a highly recommended Dr who saw me promptly. After seeing the ct scan from the week prior, he wanted to do a revision the next day which, is hard to do when you have a spouse and two young children to account for. I agreed to do "next Monday" which, is tomorrow. So, my long, trouble free run has come to an end and I'll be "on the table" for my twelfth revision early in the morning. After this, I am praying for another 20 year run! ![]() |
