I have a newly installed VP shunt due to my aqueductal stenosis / hydrocephalus. It is a programmable unit.
I am really confused. On the one hand there is anechdotal evidence that going thru airport security units and magnetometors at federal buildings will reset the shunt valve. On the other hand my neurosurgeon says not to worry except for an MRI. What are you experiences and wht hae other Neurosurgeons said. thanks |

can you look it up by brand or name and find more info about it?
Dr didn't give you any info or brochure?

My 21 year old son travels extensively by air. He has hydrocephalus and has been shunted since he is 3 months old. He had a programable valve replacement 3 years ago and has not experience any inconvenience due to airport security monitoring equipment. As always, your NS is to be considred the foremost authority on this matters. I hope this helps.

Hi gpdorward,
I also have a programmable shunt, and it is also a strata valve. I have rest my shunt once before by going too close to a car subwoofer. At first my neurosurgeon told me to keep away from any EMF's, but after he consulted several specialists they came to the conclussion that I only need to stay away from strong EMF's near my head. The 3 things I was told not to go near are MRI's (as you already know), subwoofers, and large earphones (earbuds are okay). I have listened to their advice and have had no trouble since! Hope this helps. |
