I have worked for the same Company for 27 years. Paid 100% after taxes for a LTD policy through MetLife LTD $40.00 per month for 27 years until now. I was hurt on the job and reported it to a supervisor. Seen the COMPANY Doctor, who told me I probably just had a touch of aurthritis. Seen my PCP, who told called me a baby and to just go back to work. But in the same breath, she prescribed to me Darvaset! I started taking this pain medication, my SO-CALLED Plant Nurse told me I could not work taking this type medication. Then I decided to see a specailist on my own, beingI had a health insurance policy were I didnt need a referal from my PCP. It turns out that I hae been working with severed nerves in my c-spine. To make a long story short, I filed for workmans compensation and won a huge reward but I had to sign off for it! Now MetLife LTD wants it ALL! Im now permanently disabled and only alowed to make 50% of my past income! It wouldnt even benafit me to purchase a lottery ticket! Becasue a MetLife Rep. told me I would have to report it to them if I won, or I could lose my benefits! I think I could have gotten better coverage from the MOB!

Your long term disability carrier is allowed to offset any income, including SS. I have the same thing with mine. I can not earn over a set amount each month or they will offset my benefit by that amount. It is just the way the policy works. If LTD has been paying you all this time and your comp claim is allowed or settled for back benefits, then your LTD very likely has the right, by the contract you signed with them, to be reimbursed.
I think it is time for you to find a different doctor. Sending you back to work with a prescription for painkillers when they claim you are not injured earns two strikes in my book. I am also permanently disabled and getting 50% of my former income, and in less than 9 years that will drop to 25% or less . . . I understand what it is like to lose income big time. I am not looking forward to this future time in my life . . . it's pretty scary to me.

There are many different LTD policies out there that I could of purchased and been able to make up the 50% I lost with not having to pay them back! Theses policies really exist. You may pay 10 or $20.00 more per month, but at least you'll know that your purchasing a REAL LTD Insurance Policy, not a secured loan! |

I am really sorry you got blindsided. I certainly don't discount the fact that these policies are rarely reviewed by the young employee in the same way they would by the older one, the one with time in at the employer. I can look back and see times when I should have documented an answer to a question with a signature of the person giving the answers. Or even just left more of a paper trail. And on occasion even I have been found dreadfully ignorant of how something was to work when I signed up for it!

The never-ending disaster of the US health care system and workman's comp.
HI. I am an RN in the mist of a two-year saga of cervical spine injury, surgery, etc. A word of advice: never, ever let any health care professional speak to you in any way that is abusive or disrespectful. "baby"? Unbelievable. If this is your doctor, etc. - fire them. A nurse, etc. in a hospital - ask to speak to the house supervisor. Communication between your health care provider and you is Critical in this badly fragmented health care system. You must feel free to talk, ask questions, be heard. You deserve it. In a economic system where workers are disposable commodities, you must stick-up for yourself. If you don't, and you are not subsequently thrown under the bus, you are lucky. Many wonder why litigation is so prevalent in our society and health care in particular. It is one of the few remaining checks and balances in existence to protect the little guy. You cannot depend on the ethics of health care industries and those who serve them. Count only on the profit motive. The things I've seen in 20 years of nursing are unbelievable. Please be aware, all professional health care providers are governed by Standards. These can be hard to find, but worth the effort. Any deviation from the Standards is worthy of a conversation with an attorney. I would be very interested in the content of the exam that netted a cursory pat on the head and a script for Percoset.
