There are many drugs that cause physical dependency.
This is not the same thing as "addictive". Addictive means craving, and a need for more. Many non controlled drugs cause a withdrawal syndrome, the SSRI and SNRI drugs for depression are a case in point. Even some blood pressure drugs require a taper.... beta blockers for example. Also seizure drugs require a taper. The body changes when drugs that sit on neurotransmitter receptors are used. It has only been about a decade that we have had drugs like this. So the medical community is not able to deal with it for every patient. This doesn't help YOU of course, but learning about tapers and how your drugs work, can help take the fear factor out of your situation and help you taper off more comfortably.

How are you doing now? I too withdrew from a med on my own and had about five days and nights of hell ... Warm baths, force yourself to eat as I know you have no appetite .. Ride tHose panic attacks because by golly they come at you like a tsunami ... I was on OxyContin and oxynorm. I kept in touch with my doctor by phone .. Though she didn't k ow I'd suddenly stopped them and went cold turkey. It takes a very strong person to do that because believe me, I went to hell and back.

Oxycontin is really an opiad and should have been tapered for sure. With doctors help, script written to lower amount gradually. Really risky going cold turkey. Be careful should you have a need in the future. Hope you are doing better.. You really have so much to deal with at this time. Take care dear Saffy/... (Gerry) |

Good lord ... I do know what you are going through after withdrawing cold turkey, from Oxycodone last year. I too had to sleep in the spare room.
Try warm baths ... At least five a day ... To relax you. I had panic attacks after the withdrawal that were frankly, terrifying. Keep on being strong. X |

I do know exactly what you are experiencing with WD. I started to reduce morhpnine on this thursday past with my doctor. It is still miserable. I am not sure you going cold turkey, so quickly is the best way. I think under the guidance of the doctor would be better for you in my opinion. I am going down just by 15mg. I feel the cold, hot, restless, all of it. I plan to take it slow as I can go as it is hard enough as it is. I do wish you all the best in what ever your choices are. I had heard, that RSD does not like narcotics, and I tried a good lotion for it. Hence my own desire to reduce. Call your doctor if you really are suffering. ginnie

Mrs. D is correct, this medication has side effects when withdrawing, much like morphine or other opiates. when I was getting off the medication I was prescribed Klonopin, and this really helped me for those first two weeks. After that I didn't need the help anymore. I do wish you all the best. ginnie
