Just curious...does anyone know why the neuro would want to look at my tongue. I didn't give it much thought til I left and just got to wondering????

because there are neurological signs that they can see in the way your tongue lays and moves in your mouth.

It might also have been a test for cognition too...maybe...I cant remember if that's one for cognition.

They can see if its red, swollen, if you lays in the middle. Do you control it well. They can see if you have moisture in your mouth, or if its extremely dry. Loads of stuff. The tongue is pretty cool!

If the tongue lays to one side or the other it could mean a sign of stroke or Bell's Palsy.

As for me, when I put out my tongue it was one of my first of many signs of MS, in 1980, for me. I had tremors of the tongue. I was suprised to hear this and see it, by the Neuro, I did not notice it myself.

Then I checked it often. Klonopin finally took care of that tremor too.

I didn't realize any of this so thank you all. He checked it the last two times since I had an mri. Maybe it has to do with the location of a new lesion. Maybe he's keeping an eye on that. Don't know. thanks for your help.

Yup, the tongue can tell many a tale. Mine's got a trilogy to tell haha! Geographic, fissured, lie bumps, cankers.. I get them all, and have my entire life that I can remember.

My neurologist was a bit amazed at my mouth (I have extosis - probably spelling it wrong - as well, basically bone growth that's growing over the bone below my bottom row of teeth. My Dad has them on the inside of his bottom row. Mine are the rarer variety as far as I know!).

A white tongue can mean illness, so can a very shiny, red, smooth tongue. Many tales can be told by the tongue .
