I was laying down for a nap and had QVC on the television. This was the item they were showing on the air. I knew I should get up and post this for my friends here.....it looks really helpful. Be sure to watch the short video they provide. In fact, as soon as I get my SSDI check deposited I'm planning to order one. My balance is so bad and I think this might help.

Aha! Look what else I found.......http://www.amazon.com/Drive-Medical-.../dp/B001HOOJGO. You don't have to buy the whole cane....just the tripod tip if you already have a standard cane!

they sell the tips for those at the grocery store I go to. (the grocery store also sells canes)
Think they're a lot cheaper at the grocery store too. Also at the pharmacy that I got my latest cane at, they had those tripod cane bases with the cane attached, for about $25 compared to QVC's $38.

The Tripod tip will make your cane more stable. The best thing, and a whole lot stronger would be a 'quad cane'. It has four short legs that stick out at the base. It is the only cane recommended by many Doctors, etc. for bad balance.

The problem I noticed with quad canes were that you could trip over the feet that stick out on the sides of the cane. I still think they're a good cane tho. Almost bought one when I went cane shopping last month, but decided on a regular cane because I didnt think I was that far gone to need a quad cane.
Good thing about the quad cane is that they're probably not going to tip over as easily to where you're constantly trying to bend over without falling to pick the cane up.

To avoid the tripping try to use the cane a little more to the side. The benefit of the Quad Cane will probably out way the extra effort. And, the cane can stand on it's own, don't have to lean it against something.

I also have a quad cane among my collection of aids. I admit I don't use it as much as I should, and tend to use my straight cane almost all the time. I do bring it out on a bad day though, and will use the quad before resorting to my rollator. Although this detachable end looks handy, I doubt I would trade my quad for it especially after having tried the quad. For me, it doesn't look stable enough.
At least it's not expensive Kitty so maybe it would be worth trying. I find having a variety of aids has helped to keep me upright.

The tripod tip can flex if you lean. This can lead to a loss of stability which is bad, but much worse if you are not prepared for it since you believe the cane will prevent it. I don't see much use for the tip, it would probably add work to your walking with the cane, more resistance to moving it. A lot like the difference between walking on carpet or tile. Carpet takes a lot more work just picking your feet up while walking.
