ok, I give up. After a trail again on my bike, and yes another crash before I got out of the silly driveway, it has become clear to me that I cannot balance on this thing anymore. I have decided rather than miss out on my evening rides with the hubby this year like I did last year, I will try to get a trike.

Will the MS society help me? Where do I start? I hear they are hard to peddle, is that true? Should I consider a motor assisted one? How do I know what I am looking for? I saw the lateral recumbant bikes, but they seem really low to the ground, and I wont be very visable will i? many questions!

Do you have experience? knowledge? advice? hit me. I am tired of wobbling my way to the mail box and ending up on my bum bum.

I dont know if the MS society will help, but I googled adult tricycles. Found a few that look neat. If I had a place to store one, I'd get one of these.

Then there's this one. (it folds!) I still wouldnt have anywhere to store this one tho...

I found one in the middle of nowhere. It was just sitting out in a ditch. We were on our way to go camping a couple of years ago. DBF said if it was still there on our way back, we would pick it up. It's old and beat up but it works. I still need to do some work on it and plan to put a motor on it. With a motor, if I get tired, at least I can switch to the motor and get home.

They are expensive and I don't know if there is any assistance out there to pay for them. In fact, I doubt there is. But, it is worth checking in to.

Well......if you itemize your taxes and you can get your doctor to give you a note saying you need exercise, then its tax deductible. I just saw this on Jay Leno where a tax guy took peoples questions about taxes. One question was about a swimming pool being tax deductible because the guys doc said he needed exercise.....even the chemicals and upkeep were deductible!

Its so funny you mention a trike.....told my hubby today (who just bought a bike) that I'd like to get a bike but I would need training wheels.
I got on a 2 person trike one time in Florida, and I thought it was hard to steer....but that was with another person on the back and I think it just takes a little getting used to. I suppose if you bought one and didn't like it, it wouldn't be hard to sell.

If I ever plan on getting one of those (they are cool looking) if I didnt like the bike, I know my sister would take it.

I kind of miss riding bikes. I was one of those crazy teenagers on a bike tho. I used to ride my bike, standing up, in the dark on a street full of potholes. (I memorized where most of them were) Sometimes with no hands. Now I cant ride a bike unless it's stationary and recumbent style.

My balance is out the window on a normal day, and if I'm in the dark, forget about it. I'm on the floor or hugging a wall. I dont think I've ridden a bike that actually goes somewhere since about 1989. I might have ridden my bike for a minute or two after we moved to this house, but the tires were flat, so I didnt go far.

I gave my bike (a Trek mountain bike, think it had 7 speeds) away to my niece. She gave it to my sister because she wasnt tall enough for it yet. She should fit it just fine now.

Erin! you are the BEST! I never thought of looking at Wal-Mart! I found the exact bike I wanted in the color I wanted. most of the Amazon bikes were blue and add at least $100 to the price! Wahooo! This is what I got.

Spoke to the MD yesterday, he is willing to write a prescription for it, so its tax deductible. Wahoo! it will work out to be free.

They are very popular in many of the Retirement Communities in Florida. No hills there. They are much harder to get used to turning since they don't lean to the side like a bicycle, but are not hard once you are used to them. I would get the 3 Speed one, much less effort to pedal.

We have a lady in our "Because We Can" group of cyclists with MS who rides a recumbent trike in the MS150. We just finished this weekend and she made it all 65 miles or so of the shorter route on day one. I don't think she rode on day two due to the heat and super low humidity dehydrating her, but she is a strong rider and does well. She said Ampyra has really helped her pedal cadence and her walking. She uses one of those little orange flags on a flexible pole to make sure she is visible to drivers.
