So, what are you guys doing?

Wii?
Yoga?
Chair stretches?
leg lifts?
mental exercises?
arm rolls?
chasing the cat?

I am so proud each and every time one of you tries, and reaches just a bit further. Its so hard, and no one knows better than we do, so, keep at it!

Erin524 08-23-2011 09:35 AM

I may not be exercising for awhile.

Hurt my knee a little bit a month or two ago. I thought it was healed. (kind of thought I strained it or something kicking while swimming)

My aunt thinks that I might have torn my meniscus. (aunt is a nurse practitioner)

My knee started hurting again a little bit last week. It kept feeling more and more sore over the weekend. Yesterday morning, I was climbing up the stairs to go talk to my dad, and I felt something pop in my knee. Didnt think anything of it at the time, and after I was done talking to my dad. I went back to bed. (it was 5am, I'd been up most of the night because of a bad storm)

I woke up around 11am yesterday with my knee really hurting. It kept waking me up. I was trying to catch up on some sleep that I missed, but it wasnt happening. As yesterday wore on, my knee hurt more and more. Last night when my aunt came outside to sit with us in our front yard (she lives across the street) I was sitting there pretty much crying and trying not to scream from the pain. She asked what was going on. I told her. She looked at my knee and said that it sounds like a torn meniscus.

She went home and got me some EdemaWear. Which is a special sock that doesnt have toes or a foot in it. It compresses your leg (or your arm, or torso...whichever part of your body that needs compression) and helps relieve swelling. The hospital that she works at is where the stuff was developed. She was one of the people who helped research the EdemaWear and she swears by this stuff. Said they use this for all sorts of things on the floor she works on when patients have swelling in their extremities. (she also tore her meniscus a few years ago, and used this for the swelling in her knee) She came back over and showed me how to put on the EdemaWear.

It helped the swelling some. Didnt help all the pain, but since some of the swelling went down, it's not making me cry as much. Before she put the EdemaWear on me, I couldnt bend my knee very much without screaming. It hurt so bad last night.

I'm pretty ticked off about this. I want to go walk at the gym. It just hurts waaaay too much, and now I need to go to a doctor and get my knee checked out and probably get some physical therapy for it now. (trying to avoid surgery if I can). I'm really really mad about this.

It still hurt enough last night that I didnt sleep well. Our new cleaning lady got here this morning at 830am, so now I cant go back to bed because of the noise. I feel sick from the pain in my knee this morning. At least I can walk on it with the swelling under control from the EdemaWear. (the EdemaWear is so unattractive looking)

Guess I'm going to go call my doctor now. Then I'm going to go take some ibuprofen and cry.

SallyC 08-23-2011 11:09 AM

So sorry Erin..:hug::hug:

dmplaura 08-23-2011 12:10 PM

Sorry to hear it Erin  I hope you find some relief.

Walked 30 min today. I only got about 6 hours of sleep last night (long story, not to bore everyone). I still plan on doing 4.5-5km tonight, but we'll see how I'm feeling by then.

Erin524 08-23-2011 05:25 PM

Ok, went to the doctor today. (well, the PA) and she checked out my knee, took a couple of pictures.

She doesnt think the meniscus is torn. She thinks it's inflamed tho for some reason. The PA liked the idea of the EdemaWear sock, told me to keep using that, and she wrapped my knee up in an ACE bandage (which promptly fell off as soon as I left the building)

I went and got another EdemaWear sock that's a bit bigger to go over my knee. The PA said I could put an EdemaWear sock over my knee and that might be just as good as an ACE bandage. She did say that I should rest today and use ice. (so I'm RICE-ing my knee. Got my ice, a foot stool to elevate things and I'm going to sit and crochet for a bit)

She thought that I could try walking on the treadmill later this week (thursday or friday) and to do about 15 or less at a low speed on the treadmill if my knee can stand it. PA said that if it's still bad by saturday to call her on monday and she'd get me some physical therapy for the knee. Told me to be really careful, since she didnt want the meniscus to tear if I over use it or if I turn and twist it too quickly.

I'm just glad that she was pretty sure it wasnt torn yet. But this makes me wonder. If it hurt this bad and was just inflamed/sprained, then I dont want to know how painful a torn meniscus actually is. I was crying from the pain. (about to start crying now. Leg hurts) so I guess if it were torn, I'd either be unconscious from the pain or screaming all sorts of swear words.

Really relieved now. I get to keep using the treadmill and exercising. The PA was happy to hear I'd been exercising and that I wanted to keep doing it. Hope my knee is better this weekend and that I wont have to go back to the PA for anything else knee-related. I was panicked that I was going to have to have surgery or that they'd tell me to stop using the treadmill. I actually really like walking on that. It would suck to give it up.

Yay for ice cubes. Gonna go chill my kneecap now.

dmplaura 08-24-2011 07:15 AM

Did my nightly toning last evening, then a 4.5km walk, then another 30 this morning. Work soon.

It was cold this morning!!! I was glad I trusted my instinct and wore my heavier hoodie out, it's only 11C (52F) out there, and I was out an hour ago. My hands were frigid! At least the sun's out, so I made sure to walk on the East-facing sides of the roads and kept in the sunshine as much as possible.

Dejibo 08-24-2011 07:19 AM

I agree! it was chilly outside. The thing is that heat affects me badly, but cold can be just as concerning, as I stiffen up, and get clunky and spastic. I did manage to get in 2.5 miles. I made half of rabbit hollow and decided to turn back. its not worth the price I would have to pay later on, so I am back home, warm and lazy. Maybe I will do some Wii today.

SallyC 08-24-2011 12:38 PM

We can't seem to crawl out of the 90s here!!!
Even exercising inside in the A/C, you can feel it.

Irene will bring cooler temps (80s) for the remainder of the week....I hope that's all Irene brings.

ewizabeth 08-24-2011 01:28 PM

Yesterday was in the low 70s and cool so I worked out in the yard for 3 1/2 hours. I mowed with the push mower and made nice diagonal stripes across the lawn. Then I pulled weeds in the flower beds and cut back some perennials. I picked several huge bags of veggies in the garden, cukes, tomatoes, zucchini, bell and hot peppers. I had calluses on my hands and aching feet and legs at the end but it was awesome. Today is hotter though and our AC is broken, waiting for repairman now.

Get well soon Erin, give that knee some rest so it can heal.

dmplaura 08-25-2011 09:15 PM

30 min this morning out walking, 20 minutes of toning at suppertime. Did a quick walk to the store and home to pick up a Sudoku book (about 20 minutes).

Ever have a day that you just felt "blah"? I was having one of those today. I'm just tired of everything and need change I think. Or a vacation. Yeah... a vacation!

ewizabeth 08-25-2011 10:28 PM

I hurt the last two days after the yard work. So today I had to work, felt like a well worn throw rug but went for a 15 minute walk on my break. That revived me for the rest of the day. So tomorrow I should be more energetic and hopefully get to take another walk on my break. It is so nice out right now and I want to enjoy it before winter gets here. I know that the chill of fall will arrive too soon and then I'll be complaining about the cold and having to wear a coat, lol.

Dejibo 08-26-2011 07:21 AM

2 mile walk today. its humid out there! I was sweating too much to even try Rabbit Hollow. I am going to buy a Zumba for my Wii. that outta kill me :o

EddieF 08-26-2011 06:36 PM

20 laps today, 21 more and i'll have 2011 for 2011!

Vonn07 08-27-2011 08:32 PM

sorry - I've been procrastinating on the exercises!!

but, I did do some gardening and picked pickles (okay, cucumbers) all week ... and today, I canned pickles for the FIRST time!!

it was so much excitement: 2 qts and 12 1/2 pints of dill slicers - that I had to take a power nap!! (which I rarely do!!)

I am pretty proud of myself - now I hope they turn out!! get to find out in 3 days!

Dejibo 08-28-2011 07:13 AM

Walked in a hurricaine. its offical im crazy! 2 miles. soaking wet, and I am chilled to the bone, but it was nice to survey the place before the storm knocks it down.

SallyC 08-28-2011 11:42 AM

I'm so sorry folks, but for a change, it's a beautiful day in my neighborhood. Blue skies and 79 degrees with lower humidity.:)

For my exercise, I scrubbed the carpet and area where mouse had lived, cleaned up dodo, piddle and doggy :vomit:.

All done and done in.:)

Not crazy! ... You are hardcore!

I hope the damage isn't too severe in your area Dej, good job on the walk today, that's great determination!

Keep yourself safe, we'll be thinking of you. :grouphug:

Sally, nice job on getting er' done. It was chores day today here as well.... nothing quite as brutal as cleaning up puppy messes though!

I did some walking around today to the grocery and carrying the stuff home, but for the most part laid low. Had a really crappy night of sleep and terrible nightmares, woke with my left side head throbbing (imagine due to incoming tropical storm/post tropical storm) and the pain was stronger than I've had recently. Along with that... my burning mouth crud is a wildfire today! Just not a pleasant 'feeling' day, health-wise.

Erin524 08-28-2011 10:03 PM

My knee still hurts like crazy, but I went shopping to the Nebraska Furniture Mart yesterday to see if they had any electronic lift chairs for my mom. (she's worn out 3 of them so far) and found one that I thought would be good for her. So, I had to take her back today to show it to her.

Nebraska Furniture Mart is a HUGE (freaking ginormous!) furniture store that sells all sorts of furniture, electronics and other stuff. It's a heck of an undertaking to go there, (they have a "campus" of four huge buildings...not counting their warehouses) which is why I scouted it out yesterday, so that I would know what we were looking for. When I took my mom in there, I had to get a wheelchair for her from Security, because there's no way she'd have made the walk. So, I got her the lift chair she wanted (she got a military discount...she loves stores that do that) and I took a second look at a chair that had a floor sample sale sign on it. (floor model chair). Ended up getting myself a $1000 chair for $200. Mom's chair was a $800 chair, she got it for a little less than $750 (my chair is just a recliner, nothing electronic about it)

I love buying stuff on clearance. Hate paying full price. Glad my chair was on sale, and my mom had her military i.d. with her for her chair discount.

So, I count shopping as exercise. Got my mom a bag of See's Candies while we were there. (she was threatening me with death if I didnt buy her chocolate) So, I got extra walking out of the trip because we were by the front door when mom decided she wanted candy. See's Candies is on the other end of the building we were in.

Too many people there. It was an obstacle course...started wondering if it was a full moon today, because I saw two brothers beating the snot out of each other in the middle of the display floor. (thankfully neither of them drew blood, but they were big teenage guys)

Finally got out of the building, and I had to schlep myself over to the car on the other end of the parking lot. Get the car and drive back for my mom. No wonder my knee hurts tonight. At least my mom got her chocolate fix and a new comfy chair (the leather is chocolate colored. That'll come in handy when she spills chocolate or coffee on it). Just have to wait for the chairs to be delivered next week.

I'm tired tonight. Furniture shopping is hard. Now I know why my dad doesnt like to do it and has started to send me and my mom out to do all the furniture shopping anymore. It's exhausting!

Vonn07 08-29-2011 10:01 AM

Hi ...

got my arm exercises in today!!

made a batch of dill pickles on Saturday - it was so much - that I ended up taking a nap from all the excitement!! LOL

yep - shopping is a sport ... don't care of it either!! LOL:rolleyes:

Dejibo 08-29-2011 01:16 PM

Walked 3 miles today. its GORGEOUS outside! beautiful blue sky, no humidity, light breeze, low temps. WOW! its just wonderful! We got alot of talking in today as well.

dmplaura 08-29-2011 01:40 PM

Lots of walking around today to find ANYTHING open with power! We lost power overnight (3 or 4 am) and it didn't come back on at my apartment until 1 pm.

Finally found a mall that was open with a grocery store, so I was able to pick up a couple things I had missed at the grocery yesterday.

Last night's wind was intense. Sadly, that meant for a dreadful sleep again. Woke up at 6 am, then was out of bed about 7:30, giving up to the storm. The wind was so strong, I was fearful the roof of the building was going to come off (and I'm on the top floor - corner facing where the wind was coming from direct), so that didn't allow for much rest ... plus I had stupidly gone to bed at 1 am (and I'm usually up without my alarm at 8 am or earlier) so I did myself in for the day.

I hope everyone made it through the storm okay :grouphug: lots of trees down here, lots of signs broken etc. City workers out in full force today cleaning things up.

City Hospital was also out of power for quite a long period - never good!

Irene got you too huh, Laura...UGH...

Yes, though we're very fortunate .. we had damage from trees down (some homes hit) but we didn't get the incredible amounts of rainfall here they had originally predicted.

The winds were our biggest issue, but many, many, had it much worse than us.

Vonn07 08-30-2011 10:13 PM

well, I worked outside with my aunt&uncle this morning for 2 hours - he made some deflectors for above the windows so the rain doesn't flow right down into the window sills ... and it's raining right now ... and I hear - tap tap tap .. which is a GOOD thing ..

I was so pooped after they left (did alot of standing and walking) ... then, I dug up some plants and replanted them into where I want my English garden ... and dug up some paver bricks from the old patio that was here - and laid them on the border where I want the garden ...

getting books from the library on composting, gardening ... and making garden things with cement ... sounds fun!!

it was a good day - and then my BFF took me out for Arby's for supper ...

lot of exercising in all areas! :D

TXBatman 08-31-2011 04:14 PM

Did spin class Monday night, but skipped last night to take care of my wife. Going out riding with a coworker tonight after work. Should be around 25 miles in 95-100 degree temps. Hope I survive...

Erin524 08-31-2011 06:06 PM

Just did about 11 minutes on the treadmill at the gym. My knee is a bit peeved with me right now. It's hiding under an icepack.

Debbie D 08-31-2011 06:07 PM

Finally was able to work out...12 min of bike, 10 min of elliptical, and 25 min of weight machines.

Is DW ill? I hope she feels better soon.

dmplaura 09-01-2011 07:25 AM

I'm sure we'll have a September thread up soon, I missed a couple days posting. Got busy with work.

I walked my 30 min A.M. on the 30th and 31st. Walked 4.5 km each evening as well, 20 minutes of toning each evening while cooking my dinner as well.

Spent my weekend baking 'fudgy' nut bars - which are actually made with black beans as the main ingredient, but the final product tastes like chocolate and coffee. They're heavenly, full of fiber, silky smooth texture, and under 100 calories each! :D Guilt free pleasure!

TXBatman 09-01-2011 11:44 AM

She has a sinus infection and has just been feeling really run down. Went to the doc on Tuesday and couldn't tell if it was bacterial or viral...so she is on antibiotics just in case. Have to get her healthy in time for the dive trip in about a week and a half.
