I had the Shingles about 10/12 years ago. I NEVER want to have it again, but am always a little skeered of some vaccines.

Have you read up about it, to see if there are side effects to this vaccine, as there are for the flu vaccines, for some people?

I have read about it. There are some possible side effects -- just as there are for flu vaccines. For most people that just means a sore arm and possible headache. However there can be more severe side effects.

There was a discussion elsewhere on here. If you get antiviral medication soon enough it will take care of shingles. I've had them and they were bad. Never knew about the antiviral medication. But, personally I would never have the vaccine. That's just me.

My cousin got shingles and she had that medication and it worked wonderfully. She said she would not have the vaccine; she would just do the antiviral medication again.

It's up to the individual. And yes, there can be side effects just as there can be with any kind of vaccine or medication.

The vaccine only has about a 50% success rate. Not a great vaccine IMO.

We use L-Lysene an otc suppliment. I got a herpes on the small of my back when I was 18 and I tried to bake it dry. It just got worse.

Went to the doc and he asked if I had been n the sun. yes. and after examining it, he told me it was herpes.

I asked if there was a medicine and he said yes. But he said it's expensive and L-lysene will do the same and better. He said to take 5-6 at once and another every time you think of it. It should be going away within 24 hours. It works for us and DH has herpes in eye. Shingles react the same.

I'd take my chances with (possibly) getting Shingles. I would not take the vaccine.

But if it works, it works. It did for my cousin. I would try it but hopefully I will never have another bout with Shingles.

By the way, I do not like vaccines.

L-Lysine is 1 of the 4 Copaxone ingredients/amino acids.

when i turned 60 i got it. no ill effects.
i also thought long and hard about it. both my pcp and neuro were for it and i finally decided to get it.

i thought you had to wait til 60 but if you can get it now, especially with your family hx, i'd do it.
