Default April 2012 exercise thread

Are you wiggling in public?

I have been so sick for so long, and have missed so many chances to wiggle myself in public. I put on 5 pounds! Its a beautiful day out there. (yesterday was above 90 in NH!) so, we went out for a short morning walk. 1 mile. Our normal route is between 3 and 5, but I am just not able to give what I normally give, so I am back to baby steps.

Saw an ab glider thing (eliz hasselhoff version) in Walmart and almost got it, but the more I pondered the more I realized I would use it twice, and throw in the towel. Wanted a treadmill, but the more I stand the worse I feel. A sitting bike? well...they were cheap and awkward. so, I came home with new shorts instead.

I really need to motivate myself. I am extremely far down the ladder on get up and go, and I figured this bunch is exactly what I need. To see others out there will inspire me.

so, what did you wiggle in public today?

Sorry I don't have anything to inspire you. But just wanted to let you know you are not alone. I don't wiggle anything, I stumble.

Well, I DID work out yesterday. Did 5 min of treadmill to warm up, then 30 min of weight machines. I was so tired I just couldn't get back on the treadmill or elliptical.
I haven't been working out much since the hospital visit last month. I did some swimming while in Hawaii, because I had worked out and wrenched my knee, so I needed some low impact exercise.
I get so tired when I even walk nowadays. I think it's because I'm so out of shape...

Dej, do you have a Y or some place where you can swim? My neuro told me it's the best exercise for MS patients.

If you had asked my DDH this question, he would have had an inappropriate appropriate answer for you..

I wiggled my everything for the Spirit world today, and they all applauded loudly..

We have a pool in the motel that is about 20 minutes away, and its so popular that its crowded, and I hate crowds! Have a huge lake behind my house, but its not the cleanest thing I have seen, and they keep adding chemicals to treat milfoil and sending out warnings to not water your lawn with it, or allow your animals to drink from it, so...that scares me. I would love to get a pool of my own, and someday I will.

For now, I will just leave early in the AM when its cool and everyone else is quiet, and I can walk and enjoy the birds, and a wake up conversation with DH.

Bought a new pair of walking shoes, so that should motivate me. I came home and mopped the bathrooms and kitchen. now, im gonna seek a cool place to lay down.

I rode 75 miles weekend before last and 43 miles last weekend. This coming weekend is the big ride and the weather forecast is looking about as bad as it can get in turns of making the riding difficult. Right now they are predicting a 20-25 mph headwind blowing against us all the way to Austin. I can't imagine how bad it is going to suck trying to pedal 95 miles into that on day one. I just pray that the weather guy is totally wrong this time!

Why don't you drive to Austin and make your bike ride back with the wind at your back. Just a suggestion..

Did my lowly mile today. It was a slow mile and I have a ways to go before I have the pep and drive to want to go further, but at least I am able to get the mile down. I need rest after and it takes a few hours to get my legs back under me, but im trying.

What did you wiggle in public today?

Anyone try Zumba? what did you think?

I went for a very short bike ride. Was still a bit unsteady.

Lightbulb New to MS

I learned I had MS a few months ago, but I have exercised since I was a teen. Now I'm 67 and it is a habit in my life just like brushing my teeth. Often I don't feel like working out, yet once I start it makes me feel better. If nothing else, I feel righteous. Sore muscles feel good because they are a sign of growing strength.
How does a person handle exercise with MS? Are there times when you should not exercise? I've noticed that sometimes I'm really tired, so I slow down and watch my heart rate. My foot drags so I hang on tight.
Some things that help me exercise are to pair up with a friend, try different types of exercise to find one you enjoy, give yourself a treat when you finish, play music that pumps your mood, get a dog who needs to be walked, or buy a cool outfit to wear while you exercise.
