Question Waking up in a tight ball???

I have had two recent experiences of waking up in a tight ball. The first time I was sleeping on the couch and I woke up w my back to the back of the couch and I had my knees drawn up and was curled around them. My toes were curled very tightly as if they were holding onto a pencil on some such.

The second time was last night. I dreamt that I was being restrained and woke up in the same situation as the first, maybe tighter. The only difference was that my toes were not curled.

What think thee?

You're returning to the womb, where you were safe? Not so crazy an idea.

I often awaken in a bent/tight situation. As if my muscles have shrunk up and tightened. It's scary..

I immediately stretch out and do some stretching excercises before getting back to sleep. Just figuring that I must have had a scary dream.

I don't like it one bit Ann.

Not the womb in this case, Sal. In the dream I was fighting to be free.

It is good to know that it happens to you- just one other person helps. Thank you.

Sounds like spasticity. Sometimes I'll wake up with my toes gripping like they're holding onto something. Ouch! Wish I could just sleep through it!

I must do antispastic exercises before bedtime. Toe and ankle movements, leg stretches,
hip lifts, leg lifts, stretching of always tight muscles in legs. Upper body does not need stretching as much. Magnesium helps.

I was experiencing this same symptom. I attribute it to increased spasticity. I also noticed that in the morning when I stretched my arms above my head, my knees drew up as if I was a marionette.

Stretching in the AM was painful. And yet, I had difficulty walking because my knees locked so I walk like Frankenstein's monster.

The CCSVI procedure has taken away the sleep problem of turning into the extreme fetal position. I also do not act like a puppet anymore.

Thank you for your comments. The thing is, although I have awoken in this tight ball, as soon as I consciously uncurl I am not tight or spastic.

Nothing is new in activity or meds. I'll let you know if it becomes chronic. Maybe increase the bedtime baclofen anyway.

It does sound like a spasm. Is there any chance you could sleep on a good, moderately firm mattress--or whatever type of mattress is best for you?

It just might help.

Agate, both of these have happened when i was alone at my house. SO's mattress is much better, a fairly new extra firm latex. I have planned to get a new mattress before the winter. I'll see if that makes a difference.

Thank you,
ANN
