Before I was diagnosed my MIL told my SIL she thought I drank. I had young children, her grand-children,but she never said anything to me or their father, her own son. She, as their grandmother, did NOTHING to protect them. She knew I drove with them places. No wonder I never really liked her or trusted her with kids.

She once asked me if we were friends. I said no, you're my MIL. She got upset at that. She was not and never would be my friend.

This is the very reason I take my cane when I am out in public. It really doesn't help me walk....in fact, it hinders me a little....but if I don't other people will assume I'm drunk. Sad but true. Others can be so cruel.

And yet...and yet...

I will have to admit, if a young person came into my store/restaurant/whatever staggering and slurring his/her words...would I feel comfortable letting that person get into a car and drive away?

I believe it's illegal to ASK a person if she has a disability, but I guess you could always ask something like, "Are you feeling ill? Would you like to sit down?"

Once in a while I like to play the devil's advocate.

I had a customer who would come into the Post Office slowly and deliberately, obviously trying to maintain her balance. Sometimes she'd stumble or stagger a little. She spoke very slowly and deliberately, sometimes slurring her words or getting them mixed up. Guess what? She was drunk. Every day. For real. And no, she didn't smell like alcohol.

Ooops

I actually carry a card that my Neuro got me through the Rocky Mountain M.S. Center that states that I have M.S. which may be mistaken for drunkeness. It then lists the possible symptoms I may be having.

Yep, because U.P. here that's a sport, lol. I'm thinking of getting one of those necklace/watch I.D. tags. Alot eashier than "Offisher, really I haven't din brinking."

This has happened to me twice - once with my Mother-in-law, and once with a friend's mother. Disapproving looks and whispered accusations - behind my back. Both times, it was a beautiful, hot and humid summer's day.

Now, I come right out and say 'No, I didn't have gin on my cornflakes this morning'.

My favorite comeback would be..."Oh boy, I'd better drive, 'cause I'm to drunk to walk".
