As someone who is just going down the path of testing for MS I am curious to the different kind of tests might be done. My blood work came back perfect, my nerve conduction test was good, now I am waiting on the results of the MRI. Whats next? What tests have others gone through, and with what results.

Ive done a VEP (visual evoked potential) and the big one... LP (lumbar puncture aka spinal tap). As well as tons of blood work, like you, my blood work was all normal. Try not to dwell on all this, it has a way of over taking your life if you do. One day, one test, then put it in the back of your mind while doing daily things until your doc appt.

Many neurological diseases (MS among them) don't have a definitive characteristic or blood test that can tell you for sure that you have them. So they end up doing a process of elimination. Blood work can eliminate things like Lupus or vitamin deficiencies (B12 comes to mind). Evoked potential tests can eliminate determine whether the nerve pathways are functioning correctly and help guide where to look if they are not. MRIs can tell them if there are abnormalities in the brain, spinal taps can tell them if there are proteins in the spinal fluid or other indicators of abnormal inflammation.
When they put it all together and compare it with your symptoms, they may still end up saying they don't know for sure what it is. There are types of brain lesions that don't show up on an MRI. It may truly be from migraines, or it may be sinus pressure from allergies pinching nerves. In the end, you just have to be patient and let the diagnostic process run its course. Try not to pre-diagnose yourself, or you will just cause needless stress over something you can't control. Many of the folks here spent considerable time in limbo wondering what was wrong with us, but worrying won't make it better. So try to relax until you know more from the docs and good luck with hopefully getting something definitive one way or the other out of you latest MRI. You have great advice here...it's a process of elimination and a monitoring of symptoms. Lumbar puncture and evoked potentials are two tests besides the MRI that help the docs...
keep a symptom journal to keep track of symptoms. And as stated above, try your best to live life and not get tied in knots regarding all the strange symptoms...write them down and then try to live your best life... ![]()

I went many years with symptoms before I got such bad eye problem that my VER was abnormal, other eye tests were also abnormal, then MRI was abnormal. I had never had an MRI before--maybe they were brand new in 27 years ago or so? Anyway, many years of symptoms, several clinical tests, then finally a positive. But that was just the beginning in learning to cope with it.
I remember years ago they predicted computers would make dx's foolproof and instantaneous. Oh how wrong that was! |

remeber that this is a hunt for clues for what is wrong. Rarey does any one test become a Eureka moment (if life were only that easy, eh?). MS is a process of elimination, experience and supporting observations and tests. In fact, many people go into the testing phase/limbo land and actually end up with a diagnosis of somehting else all-together.
Worrying won't help, won't make an answer appear faster - it only causes stress and anxiety. ![]() Sometimes waiting and wondering is the hardest part. Know we are here to answer any questions (heck, we have ALL been where you are at now). We are a good group of folks, albeit somehwat strange & goofy at times, who care for each other, can put medical-esse in simpler language and provide tips along the way. Regardless of your eventual diagnosis, welcome!

Thank you everyone! Honestly being able to chat with others and simply read threads of others who have been in my shoes is very comforting. keeping a symptom journal is a great idea. I tend to be pretty forgetful in general
![]() Im still wrapping my head around the possibility but the last couple of days my anxiety has not been so bad. Im now trying to research the different type of testing so I know what to expect. |
