I decided I would do some substitute teaching to supplement my SSDI. I spent two months going through the review/orientation process and yesterday was my first assignment.
My day started at 5:30am. I took a shower and commensed to sweat until 10:30am. I soaked out my dress shirt, sport jacket, and tie. ![]() By 11:00am I was in my planning period and asking myself what was good about this decision and being here? The answer was NOT a darned thing! By 12:00pm my legs were numb and I had trouble just getting to and from the front of the room. Oh! I was teaching/babysitting 7th graders. I decided to suck it up and continue to the end of the day. All in all the kids were fine with you typical "interesting" students and their substitute trails and tricks. None of which I fell for at all. By 3:15pm I was very sore, had a severe headach, and was exhausted. The best part of the day was going home. I had to take an extra Tramedol and 600mg of Ibuprofen when I got home. My lower back, hips, and legs were screaming in pain. Not to mention the severe fatigue and headach. I had a long discussion with my wife when she got home and told her that I think this was a big mistake and that I over estimated myself and what I could do in a day. She was proud that I even thought of the idea, persued it, and tried at least one full day. This was not the answer though. The price will be paid for the next two days at least for this one day of activity. I feel awful today physically. I've called the school board, apologized and have resigned my position. It's just way to much on me. Now I know, once again, why I'm on total disability. It's becuase I AM!

So sorry it didn't work out for you. But, you don't know unless you try. And Kudos to you for doing that!
Since you apparently would like to do something, maybe you want to try tutoring? I don't know anything about it, but I imagine the hours would be less demanding? Just a thought. Last edited by Catch; 02-05-2008 at 12:56 PM. Reason: delete frown that didn't work |

I'm sorry you found that you couldn't do it. But I give you so much credit for trying! It took a lot for you to give it a shot. Unfortunately, working as a substitute teacher was too much for you but tutoring students could maybe be an option? Is there anything else you can do within the schools to help the students?

So sorry it didn't go well. That is so awesome that you tried and you stuck it out the whole day.

Sorry it didn't work out for you but I agree with Catch, maybe tutoring would be something you could do.
