I have been really tired lately and have been doing not much more than taking my meds and falling back asleep for the past week or so.
BUT on saturday I was feeling not too bad, woke up, took meds, had cup of tea and realized that my legs from the knee down to the toes and my right arm from the elbow to the fingers felt numb and not a part of my body. the symptom just kept getting worse, and I told hubby 'I think that my legs are going paralized, I don't know if I can stand up'. It took a while and I tried to get up. My legs could hardly hold me, knees felt like jelly, lower part of legs (from knees to toes) just felt like they were not there, and I sat down right away again. WTF? is that all about? Did not know what to do. Should I go to emerg? stay put and hope it would go away. I just did not want to get anyone upset or worried so I played it down. But that feeling of weakness and tingling and I have no words to describe the feeling or lack of in my legs. I know no one is a doctor, but is this something that should worry me? It is still happening from time to time, but not as severe, and not for as long. Should I go to emerg next time this happens again? Is this the beginning of the end of my legs? Needless to say I had a majour pitty party on sat and sun. Legs are still weak from the knees down to toes. Toes and balls of feet feel as if there is cotton inside of them, loose socks are too tight. Just does not make any sense to me at all. Right arm is also still weak and does not feel like it is part of my body ( I guess that is the best way to describe the feelings in those parts of the body). sorry for being this long, but yep I'm scared of what may be happening. Anyone?

Call your neurologist tomorrow. Tell him/her what happened. You might be having an exacerbation and the neuro will decide whether or not you might need steroids.

I have never really had a exacerbation per se, my symptoms just slowly progressed. But yes, thanks, I will give her a call tomorrow.

I thought the same as you, and mine started in October. I just thought it would pass but here it is almost March and still the same. I am numb from scalp to fingers. Saw my Neuro yesterday and he is scheduling 3 days of IV steroids next week.
Basically my neuro said, Ms is so unpredictable, anything is possible. I too have never had a exacerbation and everything has been slowly progressive. So Im hoping this Steroid thing will help. Good luck. |

Even though you say your SP it sure sounds like you could be having an exacerbation but.....
![]() I have had my fair share of what your experiencing except I can't say I have ever felt paralized but my legs have barely worked at times. And yes it can scare the hell out of you. In my case, I get my legs back.

All of what you've described are "Sensory Symptoms" (see following link, under that sub-title), and often occurs as a result of spinal lesions. The feeling like "is not part of my body" is called "Proprioceptive Dysfunction; Loss of awareness of location of body parts": http://www.mult-sclerosis.org/mssymptoms.html Since this is a new (or worsening of old) symptom, and has lasted longer then 24 hrs, it is an attack. What should you do? That is really up to you and whether you would normally try steroids for a flare-up such as this. I just ride it out, and it normally takes from 4 - 12 weeks clear up. Sometimes it gets much worse (including more parts of the body, stronger sensations, etc.), and sometimes it just stays where it is for several weeks. If it gets worse or you get scared about something, don't be shy to ask. I know this experience all too well. ![]() Cherie

Cherie's post was insightful...and correct but not necessarily for all....I too have have had this happen and it doesn't last for weeks at a time..I have had it happen for only short periods of time we're talking minutes here, as well, scared the crap out of me the first time....I had been feeling kind of cruddy numb spots here and there some tingling when all of a sudden I was totally unaware of the entire right side of my body,it was as if I had gone completely paralyzed, I have since had this happen on multiple occasions somtimes just an arm or a leg but it usually goes away fairly quickly, I thought I was having mini strokes! I DID however go to my neuro young lady! Alas in the end it was only the MonSter but you should always be sure!

THANK YOU for clarifying that, afwife . . . you are absolutely right. What I meant was the numbness part might last that long, if it is an attack, NOT the Proprioceptive Dysfunction. The Proprioceptive Dysfunction is very fleeting for me and usually only lasts seconds to moments. Cherie
