Sage advice, Judy. It's my practice too to do that. Never can be too safe. And I'd rather be overprepared than underprepared when it comes to disability OR going to another doc.

HPV is one of the things that can cause abnormal cells. It's probably the leading cause according to what I've read, but I can't provide the cite for that right now as it was early, early this year. It was from reliable sources, however, and was in my doc's info too.

I hope everything doesn't wear you out and the test comes out fine. I had a colposcopy done several years ago in my ealry 30s. I have HPV and the test was showing no other problems.

Somehow, though, I am on the every six months visit schedule still, all these years later.

The C didn't really hurt, but I kept bleeding after and had to go in a second time to get cauterized or something again...?

Wishing you the best,
Weebs

It went fine. Honestly, the worst part is when they insert those metal things at first. You know what I'm talking about if you've had a PAP. That's almost rough on the poor skin.

Sprayed vinegar (which stung a bit), looked around, moved the cervix, and said, "Doesn't look like any immediate concerns". He had told me before starting that 9/10 results like mine come back without further problems.

It was not bad! His secretary is going to call for me to go see him in a couple of weeks for the follow up.

I got drilled about the smoking situation, as expected. I told him I already had plans to first speak with my neurologist about it on the 18th. Which is SOON! I can't wait to see my neuro

The doc did say the results came back indicating 'dysplasia', but he could not see any immediate concerns.

HPV is not something that I even thought about. I thought that was part of the routine PAP test. Not saying that I'll be positive for it, but it's certainly not something I thought about. Always protected encounters, but you can't trust anything outside of abstinence either.

Hi Laura, glad it went well.

What kind of "follow-up" do you have to see the doctor for in two weeks?

I believe what they usually do is, if your Pap comes back abnormal, they then do the HPV test on the same sample, to see what kind of risk you have. When they called to tell me my Pap was abnormal, they immediately said "But you don't have HPV."

I am surprised they didn't say anything to you about HPV, one way or the other. You might ask (just so you'll know).

The follow up is for the results of the swabs etc they took today. Yeah, HPV was not discussed. In any event, it sounded like things were pretty 'ok' and that this may be a false positive or something minor

Saw my gynecologist today for yearly checkup after having skipped doing a colposcopy or follow-up Pap since my abnormal Pap a year ago. She didn't say a word about it until she was all done, when she said "hopefully your Pap will cooperate this year!" and that sometimes the cells just get funny-looking because they're old, and she would call me if anything was abnormal.

(I get funny-looking because I'm old, too. )

Thus, the whole thing just doesn't seem to be a big deal. In contrast to the nurse calling me up last year and saying gravely "Your Pap smear came back abnormal. You need a colposcopy."

I just had my pap and got the results that said.

Normal, except high risk for HPV. I got a hand out with it explaining all about HPV. wth is that all about? in my world NOT normal is not a good thing, but this said NORMAL, and then tried to confuzzle me.

I called the GYN office who said "at my age, its a concern, and I have a previous cancer history, so I am at higher risk. My pap is normal and my tests indicate i DONT have HPV, but I am to be made aware of my risk factors."

Puff puff puff...I was almost explosive! I have survived breast cancer, pretty aggressive stuff, and now MS and some secondary sjogrens and have plenty of REAL monsters living in my closet. Now this high rent gyn wants me to worry about maybes! I wanted to drive to her office just to slap her. how bout you tell me "all is well. go home, dont worry, you have enough on your plate." no, she wants a $400 test next round. I swear to God...

*walks off mumbling to herself*

Glad you are feeling better! and its over!

Aww Dej, I'm sorry about your experience. That's horrible!

High risk for HPV??? I thought this was transmitted through sexual encounters... is it floating around in the air we breathe or something? Maybe I'm misunderstanding what HPV is.
