Default Argh!!

So the quitting smoking has been going well. Very well!

Here's the "argh!!" part of the story...

I noticed after I quit smoking that my canker sores I used to get tons of as a youth/young adult before smoking, had gone away with the smoking. Odd, but it's the case.

So I quit, and back came the cankers. No biggie, I know acidic foods seem to trigger them.

Well, 1 formed in the back of my throat, but the little thingie that hangs down (someone will burst in with the scientific name!) so I went salt treatment and Chloraseptic. Well, it didn't seem to be getting better... in fact, I have now developed a little garden of white sores in my throat on the right side, and it appears that the left is beginning to join in.

No fever, no swollen glands, but I do feel like crud and my throat is megasore as you can imagine.

Yup. I do believe I got strep throat! Or SOMETHING. It's been ages since I had strep. Sigh.

Is this what 1 trip to the USA will do to a Canadian?! LOL jk

Doctor's appointment at the clinic in approx. 1h in any case. I did call my doctor today, and the secretary said we'd have to schedule for me to go in to discuss Nortriptyline, but to stop taking the other medication (venlafaxine) for now.

HEY ITS MONDAY IF YOU MISSED IT LOL!!!

The dangly thing is the Uvula.

it does sound like strep.

Also there is a vitamin/herbal thing called Llysine. you can buy it at most grocery stores. this really helps keep canker sores in check.

hope you feel better.

What are you going to do with alla that money you are saving now?

The white patches could be thrush/candida too, Laura. We use acidophilis (natural/vitamin) for that around here, and avoid sweets. Only a doc would know for sure.

There is a very good rx that can be prescribed for the canker sores too . . . will clear them up in a few days. I can't remember the name, but it's an oral treatment.

Hope you better soon! Let us know what the doc says. It could be a number of things. I have little cysts that form in the back of my throat too and sometimes they are irritating. My doctor said they are fine and nothing to worry about unless they get bigger or hurt bad.

Well, I got into the clinic, and Cherie may be correct. The doctor seemed to think that it looked more like thrush than strep, but still put me on an antibiotic (amoxicillin) and antifungal (fluconazole).

So I guess I should be avoiding sweets now huh? What about sugar free gum? That to be avoided as well?

How in heck's name did I end up with oral thrush if that is in fact what it is? Grumble. Seems I quit smoking and tossed my body into complete turmoil.

I hope it's not the new man that caused this, if you know what I'm saying!

Thrush is caused by an imbalance, Laura. It's basically a yeast infection (you know the "lady" one's we get from some antibiotics...?), but appears in the mouth.

Sometimes too much sugar throws things out of whack, and my youngest tends to get it around Halloween. Sugar-free is fine, at least for thrush.

Here is some info on it:

I treat with acidophilis, and that can clear it up if caught early enough.

I'm not sure if honey would be considered "sugar", but that link I gave you might tell you.

I make the kids use Equal when they have it . . . but I'm a mean mom.

So oral yeast is actually more common than I was thinking?

The doctor asked if I had been on an antibiotic recently, which I have not.

You speak of imbalances... maybe my major quitting smoking imbalance caused this? Sigh.
