Default Allergic reaction and the flu? Bloating too?

Hi everyone,

Feeling sick today, and normally I wouldn't even bring it up except that I had an allergic reaction to Bactrim DS including a rash on my legs and torso. I was taking it for a UTI. I'd taken two days worth (four pills). Someone said on my other thread that sulpha allergies are common for those with penicillin allergies. I have both now.

I also have muscle aches, chills and bad headache.

Last night I started to bloat around my mid-section and I wasn't passing a lot of urine.

So, I called the doctor this morning and he said to stop the Bactrim because it's an allergic reaction.

I haven't had a flu type virus in almost 30 years. Is it sometimes accompanied by bloating and retaining water? I just hope the Bactrim wasn't hurting my kidneys. They're working better today but not passing as much liquid as before.

BTW, I got some Macrobid to replace the Bactrim, but I'm not going to start it until tonight and let the Bactrim get out of my system some more.

Thanks in advance for any advice...

I looked it up.

http://www.drugs.com/bactrim.html

If you read thru it. and one of the side effects is urinating less or not at all...I'm guessing that might cause a little "back up" and cause bloating.

Thanks Erin,

I'm going more and more as the day goes on so that's a relief.

Some people say that Cipro isn't good for MS, but it works like a charm for my UTI's. Have you considered that?

I would not leave weak voiding, a bloated stomach, combined with a UTI, Ewizabeth. Get on a replacement antibiotic ASAP, keep any fever in check, and go to the hospital for a cath if you can not void properly SOON.

Wiz, I can offer plenty of sympathy... not much advice though. I'm allergic to penicillin, sulfa drugs and Macrobid. I was told that Erythromycin was my only choice for now.

So I do everything I can to keep a UTI at bay...lots of water, cranberry tablets, and try to keep my sugar intake low(not easy around these holidays).

I hope you feel better soon!

Thanks TK,

Whoa! I hope I don't have an allergy to Macrobid too!

Anyway, the plumbing is working now. I have a fever of almost 101 degrees. It's been many years since I had one. It feels foreign to me.

I suppose it's good though, my body is fighting whatever this is.

Wiz! Take care. High fevers are no fun. I hope the new abx start working soon and you are back to your ol' spunky self again.

Me too...allergic to Bactrim, Macridid and Cipro. My Doc gave me Macrocillian(SP) the last UTI and it took longer, but did the job, along with lots of CB tabs and drink.

UTIs are yucky, especially with fever.

Feel better, soon..

Wiz, my guess is your symptoms are related to the UTI and not the flu. It is possible to have both a UTI and the flu but, I'm betting you don't.

Make sure your drinking plenty of fluids. I'm hoping the Macrobid works quickly.
