It's the fourth thursday of the Month of November.
It's a huge holiday here. Right next to Christmas and Easter.

Smile totally off topic memorries.

I know this is totally off topic, but when you guys talk about thanksgiving it brings back such sweet memorries that I thought I should share.

I am not a US citizen, but we lived in the US for a few years, when I did my residency in internal medicine.

when my son was 5 years old, he came home really excited and told me that he has this form, they gave him at school, and if he draws a nice turkey picture, he is going to get a turkey from "fresh fields" (a very expensive organic product posh store), so he sat all afternoon and drew a really amazing colorful picture of the most beautiful turkey I have ever seen (and he was not a drawing kind of kid normally), and then he urged me to go to the store, and get the turkey for him.

when we got there, I realized that this was a contest and they were only going to give one turkey to the best picture they recieve. so how do you explain this to an enthusiastic 5 year old, who is eagerly awaiting for his turkey?

well, you don't (at least I didn't). I just went and got the best looking turkey in the store, and paid a fortune for it from my hard earned money. and believe me the happy look in his eyes, was worth every penny!!

but, then we arrived home, I realized that I have a very expensive turkey that I don't even know what I should do with, as I have never baked a turkey before. so I thought about it for a while and then decided that just like I find answers to problems that arise during my practice, by searching the relevant literature, I will do the same.

as funny as it may sound, I took a day off from work, and searched for the best recipes I could find, for preparing a turkey, stuffing and all the rest of the thanksgiving food. and I found a site where the best US chefs, gave the recipes they liked most. those were very complicated and required a lot of hours of work, but I thought that my son deserves it.

we invited some friends over, and after me and my son worked all day, preparing those dishes, we all had a real feast.

Alice, what a sweet story! I love children so much, I'm tellin' ya, if my body would have let me, I'd probably have an entire litter of them. But am very blessed to have my two girls.
Just such a sweet story!

Default hi

Happy Thanks Giving to those of you celebrating it on Thursday!

I understand what you mean about preparing things for the meal as I have to do that with Christmas dinner. I have to admit I pretty much cheat as much as I can, so frozen roast potatoes, frozen yorkshire puds, frozen turkey joint ( only hubs eats meat in this house) I get my mum to make me a nut roast, the only thing I usually make from scratch is my red wine gravy!

This year as Hubs is off Christmas Eve we will (he will!) be preparing the fresh veg and leaving it in cold water until the following day. (its the only time we do that as we know the vitamins from the veg leach into the water). Ive decided on a cheese souffle for my xmas dinner as thats easy to do.

We both aren't too keen on xmas pudding so we are having apple crumble with vanilla ice cream. Again the crumble will be prepared the day before.

So Im all for making it easy. Theres only the two of us Christmas day and I normally see my parents boxing day.

Alice that story was so sweet! I remember the first time I cooked turkey (I'd grown up in a vegetarian house hold) I was so scared and didn't have a clue what to do!

Love
Rach

Thanks Alice for that gorgeous story.

Rach down here in Aussie land its usually about 35C Chrissy day, so I am lucky as I prepare the turkey(well a rolled frozen thigh) a day before so its a cold meat, and have loads of salads and prawns. Dessert is usually a Pavlova, fruit salad(mmmm fresh cherries) I'd love to enjoy a hot christmas lunch in a cold country.
Ooops have I hijacked a thread again.
Hope everyone celebrating Thanksgiving has a wonderful day
Kate

mouth watering food from around the world (never thought that in australia christmas is in the summer?), great holiday memories.

and you know what, I am going to celebrate thanksgiving with my family.
after all we have been in the US for quite a few years, so I can be seen as 1/4 american.

happy thanksgiving to you all, and may we all have a lot to be thankful for, this year, and the years to come.
