I just have a general question about a symptom I've never had. When the symptom of speech comes up, what exactly is it that happens? Over the past week my stuttering which has never been an issue before has gotten bad, a few times a day.
Thanks for any answers. I'm still doing well, yet need to slow down my right arm and neck muscxles are weak. Hope ur doing well. |

When I have a problem with speech, it feels like my tongue has swelled up and I end up mumbling. My lips also get very stiff and I just have difficulty forming words.
The other thing that happens is that if I talk a lot, my vocal chords get tired and my voice gets very raspy to the point that I have even lost it at times. When I rest it for a couple of hours and take mestinon, I can talk again. But, as we all know, it's different for everyone - that's just my experience. Are you still on your ski trip? Sounds like fun - I used to ski when I was much younger and I know how much fun it can be! |

Hi Tyson,
I hope that you had/are having fun with the ski trip! My speech problems started out long time ago with not being able to pronounce certain sounds at times (like 'k'- it would sound like 'kh,' the French R-sound). I spoke French at work, and many people thought that French is my first language, I guess, because of not being able to pronounce certain sounds at times... I remember we had an inspection at work, and the inspection guy interviewed me both times (once per year over two years), and both times he commented on my accent, and how it was a very strange one that sounded Filipino or Chinese (I'm Scottish-Canadian). Other people commented on an accent too, including my friend's bf's mother- In fact, on that particular day, I was extremely tired, and noticed problems with being tongue-tied and stuttering, and sorta hearing an accent coming out of my mouth too! lol...Pretty bizarre stuff! When I brought it up to my friend many months later (when my speech turned very bad), she said that she had noticed it too... All throughout this time, I remember becoming increasingly aware of my tongue, if that makes any sense. I'd move it around often in my mouth, to touch the back teeth. I have no clue why I was doing this, or felt the need to do this, but I'd do it. Now, whenever the MG gets bad, I can't touch the back teeth with my tongue. But yes, like Juanita, when I'm very bad, I can't really pronounce much of anything and my voice starts to go raspy- it sounds like complete mush. I usually have to write things down when that happens, or talk very, very slowly. |

Like Juanitad, my tongue also feels like it's swollen when the speech problem comes up. It's like the back of my tongue is just too big for my mouth, and the tip of my tongue won't go where I tell it. I tend to think of my mouth as going flat-lipped. It won't form any shape but the one it's in when I'm not speaking. It comes out nearly unintelligible - try speaking without pursing or shaping your lips at all (open or closed are your only options) or your tongue, and you'll see what I mean.

Voice / neck issues don't happen that often for me, but when they do:
- my voice gets really deep - my words sometimes get 'stuck' - my hubby says I 'sputter' - I have to take a deep breath, slow down, and concentrate harder ....cause it's an EFFORT to spit the words out. My throat gets tight and I feel like I have to work hard to push the words out!! Like I said, I hate it when this happens - - but a really good sleep helps tremendously! Sue |

Depending on where my weakness is at I will have a very "nasal" voice or very "manly" voice and if I continue, I will lose my voice. Also my tongue gets weird and I will have trouble speaking the words, like I said it depends on what part is the weakest.

I have the "thick" tongue issue.....my speech sounds okay to me at times...yet, my husband can't understand all I am saying...I also have a hard time pronouncing words...mestinon has really helped me....but it is so embarrassing at work when this happens.
It can really cause social phobia... |

Cricket, I love the way you describe it. It's exactly they way mine feels too.
I do get the think where it feels like my lips, and skin around my mouth feel like they're getting stiff. And yes it can make a person feel shy when trying to pronounce certain words. My voice gets raspy as well. But make sure you listen to it, when it happens. Rest Love Lizzie |

I stutter when I'm hyperthyroid. So I'm glad your doctor is checking you for that.
