Default Prostigmin - Unavailable?

I am new to this forum but not new to MG. Diagnosed in 1995 and had my share of ups and downs, treatments, etc. Prostigmin works better for me than Mestinon. Is it true that Prostigmin is not manufactured now? I had been told by Valeant that it was on back order but I read on another post that it is now listed as being discontinued.

Mestinon causes major GI problems for me. Is there any other alternative?

What dose of mestinon do you take, I was prescribed 180mg but get real bad diarrhea had severe stomach cramps and vomiting. So instead of 180mg I take 165mg and that seems to work ok still have little trouble but not to bad.

I take generic (pyridostigmine bromide) mestinon and just got a 3 month refill with no problem. Two companies make it...CorePharma and Global. I sure hope at least one of them contunues to market it!!

Where did you hear it was (or might be) discontinued?

Please note:there seems to be confusion about the drug PROStIGMIN and the drug PYRIDOSTIGMINE which is the same drug as Mestinon which most of us take today. Prostigmin is an old drug which was used 30 years ago or more - it is NOT Pyridostigmine . It has a shorter duration of action than Mestinon and a lot more GI side effects. We had no choice 40 years ago as this was the only drug we were given. Mestinon is a smoother drug and has less side effects. Prostigmin is not used as much in modern neurology today and this might be why it is being discontinued . We have an arsenal of drugs today that didn't exist years ago. Prednisone and Prostigmin were our only choices - today we have choices including immunosuppressants , IVIG, Plex and certain chemo drugs. If it becomes unavailable you have other choices and you will do well.

Yes, we are very fortunate to have other choices now. I took Mestinon for quite a few years and then was switched to prostigmin when GI problems began. I will have to tweak my dosage of Mestinon and hopefully get it right within a short time. My son is getting married next week so I will not risk that until after the wedding! The two drugs are different and as far as I know, there is no problem getting Mestinon or generic form.
