Default MG cataract surgery

Hi All, My father has MG for a little over two years now (ocular followed by bulbar) and has been on 12.5 / 15 mg prednisone and 30 mg mestinon 4 times a day. unfortunately he had to discontinue imuran mid way due to side effects and hence could not wean way from prednisone. over this year he has developed cataract in both eyes - a known side effect from prolonged prednisone use.

Now for cataract surgery the opthamologist is struggling to find the right antibiotic eye drops that are safe for those with MG. I am able to find checklists of which medicines are not to be used, or used with caution, but not which ones are known to be better tolerated in this condition. Appreciate if anyone can share their experience or a relevant link on the medicines that can be used in relation to cataract surgery. Thanks.

I had cataract surgery in both eyes (2 weeks apart) about 5 years ago. I don't remember any discussions with the eye doc about specific eye drops. I believe he used the same ones he used for everyone else in the room who was prepping for the surgery.

FYI, I had mg for about 8 years at that point. I didn't have any problems during or after the surgery.

Good Luck.

Juanita

hpnn,
It may be that the delivered dose of antibiotic used in eye surgery is low since the antibiotic is almost topical in that case and the amount delivered to the body may be low. There are some antibiotic interaction guides on the web. The one I've used is for dental procedures but it talks about antibiotic interactions and is here:
