Default Food questions

Hi folks!

I was wondering if those of you who are more knowledgeable than I on MG could clear a couple of food related questions up for me.

1. In the summertime, when we're battling the heat already, should we stay away from hot food? Hot beverages?

2. How do you all handle fresh fruits and veggies? I love them but can't get to the store often. So I buy them and spend two days recovering from the trip and watch them go bad before my eyes while I'm too weak to cook. Suggestions?

Thanks!

Hey, Angell.

If your swallowing is bad, hot foods can make it worse. Does it for you? It doesn't necessarily have that effect on everyone with MG.

There is a great way to avoid going out to the store, besides the grocery delivery route. You can buy freeze dried or dehydrated fruits and veggies in cans that last for 25 - 30 years! It's great for emergencies, such as power outages, too. You can also get cans of other foods as well, as a back up for when you can't go out (i.e., snow storms).

There are places such as The Ready Store and others where you can buy food storage. All you do for meals, for example, is to heat up water, put it in the food, and stir! It also cuts down on cooking when you're too weak to make a meal. You could always try a can or two to see if you like them. They have a variety of different foods. Saratoga Farm's brand tends to have fewer ingredients and not as much sodium as Mountain House.

You really do have to be creative when it comes to things like this. I hope this helps.

Angell, I appreciate the sentiment, but I'm hardly infallible and I certainly don't know more than what's in my very limited brain pan.

I think that everyone should have a reasonable stock of food such as that. It's hard to say when we might need it, and it might last longer than we will!

It only stays fresh about 6 months after you open a can, however. So you have to finish a can within that amount of time.

Anyone else have suggestions?

Annie

Annie, I know that you aren't infallible - my wife assures me that she's the only woman who is.

Seriously though, you are going to be wrong sometimes, but I'm a numbers guy...I like my odds with you.

And while I'm back in the food thread... what about diet? Are certain foods contraindicated with MG? Others that are helpful? Anyone?
