I know we're supposed to avoid magnesium. Does that also include the small amount that's usually in multi-vitamins? I stopped taking mine when I read that I shouldn't have magnesium.
And calcium - Is that a yay or a nay? |

The magnesium found in common multivitamins is not absorbed.
Try and get your magnesium from foods that provide it well. this is a list of magnesium content in common foods: http://www.algaecal.com/magnesium/ma...ich-foods.html People eating processed foods, typically become low in magnesium. Caffeine and alcohol and some drugs deplete it also.

Mary, I sure would like to know what source said that you should avoid magnesium!
The body needs a balance of electrolytes, which we normally can get enough of from food. The amount of magnesium we have in our diets - as Mrs. D. said - is not too much. There are some diseases, like kidney disease, that are more sensitive to changes in certain electrolytes in a diet. Usually what is talked about with magnesium and MG is medicinal magnesium, such as that used with pregnant women in certain conditions! That can absolutely send you into an MG crisis because it's a huge dose. You absolutely need a multivitamin. I actually take children's vitamins so that I can take them twice a day. But everyone's situation is different and a conversation with your primary doctor would be a great thing to do. You'd be amazed at how many people have deficiencies of Vitamin D, calcium, iron and B12. Vitamin D is a common deficiency and can make MG worse. So can a B12 deficiency because we need B12 to make acetylcholine. I hope that helps, Mary. I also read on one of the major MG sites to avoid magnesium. Then my neurologist tells me to take it! He actually has a list of irises I must take, and if the cat will be polite enough to move, I will get it...
Ok, here we go: Centrum silver 1daily (I'm 63) Vitamin C 1000 MG time released 2x daily Vitamin E 400 IU 2x daily Vitamin D3 2000 II 2x dailyCerefolin/Metanx(Major B vitamin complex prescription) 1x daily Odorless garlic (garlique) 1x daily Potassium &magnesium for leg cramps And I take a peppermint oil for my tummy and manganese. Plus Mestinon timespan 2x and 10mg 2x prednisone. So now I have the shingles. Goody. |

Hey, Oops3. If you can get some methylcobalamin sublingual tablets, which are put under the tongue and absorbed into the bloodstream, that will help heal the peripheral nerve damage from shingles. You can find them at www.iherb.com I particularly like the Jarrow Brand of 5 mg. tablets. You can get discounts there on supplements and free shipping at a certain price point. I've been getting my supplements there since 1999. I hope your shingles goes away quickly. Have they thought about an antiviral for you?
You might also want to ask your primary doctor to test your B12 before you start any supplements. Do they know which ones you're taking? Annie |

I am such a scatterbrained, and I know it, that all my meds are kept in a file on my iPhone. I just hand the phone to them and say, have at! And yes I do happen to have the B12(?)g(I'm not getting up, too painful) and will start it. Tomorrow I talk to neuro about shingles and see what he wants to do. Does this mean I'll have to give up the prednisone? I was finally getting a life back!

Going to neuro this afternoon, so I'll know more then. At least he itchy part is where I can't reach it. The painful part is where my arm rubs against my side. I just did not need this after wrecking my back!
