I am new to all of this so please bear with me. I have been diagnosed with alcoholic periphal neuropathy for 2 years now. I am no longer drinking but the pain has become unbearable in the evening hours. The only insurance I have is through the county and they have no neurologist to send me to. So another words I have to pay out of pocket. I am lost and have tried so many things to try and better myself. My primary doctoe has me on the highest dosage of neurontin, pain pills(which i use sparingly), tramadol, and a back muscle relaxant. My quality of life has greatly diminished.
I have applied for disablity. But I need a good neurologist that can update my diminished illness. I have lived in Broward county since last July and have yet to see a neurologist. I need help and/or suggestions of how to deal with this and a "good" doctor to help me. I need a humanitarian, if there is such a thing. God Bless! |

Hi
good for you that you have been able to quit drinking! the county health department should be able to give you a list of local Neurologist's that accept Florida Medicaid, and your primary care doctor should have that info for you too. here is our Peripheral Neuropathy forum where you may find a lot of helpful info on treating PN http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/forum20.html

I am confused
when you say you have health insurance through the County...is that not Florida Medicaid? or is that something different in Broward? I really would recommend that you visit our PN forum as there are members there who have a lot of helpful info that you can use on your own to help

Welcome to NeuroTalk...
Have you been evaluated at your regular doctor for diabetes, or insulin resistance? Your regular doctor can test you for B12 and Vit D deficiences which can impact the nervous system. Alcohol induced neuropathies often resolve with proper diet, abstinence from alcohol, and high dose vitamins, including high dose Thiamine. Low B12 as well, can lead to nerve damage. B12, D3, Thiamine and the other Bcomplex all are over the counter and would not be covered by insurance. I think you should come over the our Peripheral Neuropathy forums and read for a while, to see what is there for you that might help. http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/forum119.html http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/forum20.html You are already taking the drugs that many PNers get from doctors.
