Confused cymbalta not enough

My son is 48 years old and is single. He takes 90 mil of cymbalta aday and does fine until something upsets him and he goes into deep depression. Can he take something with cymbalta to help keep him up and not go into depression ? The doctors don't seem to know. He took a xanax once and it brought him right out of it. But I know that xanax is very addictive. I am at my wits-end. What can I do?
