I have been to this forum several times because of various searches. My mother has peripheral neuropathy from diabetes as well as from a fall. Apparently, the nerves were damaged in some way. She uses Neuragen PN for now but it is soooo expensive. We just ran out and I am getting desperate. She was finally approved for a scooter but that won't take her pain away. She can't feel the floor and is in danger of falls but if you just brush her feet, it sends shooting pain.
The problem is this, she also has glaucoma. She was on Cymbalta and it was working really really well. I didn't even notice how well until she had to go off of it. I have researched for hours and ALL of the drugs I can find will adversely affect her glaucoma. We are both at our wit's end. Is there any drug out there that works that DOES NOT also affect glaucoma? Her choice with Cymbalta was to go blind or have the pain in her feet back. I understand why she chose what she did but I can't stand the pain she is in. I really hope someone can help. |

Welcome to Neuro talk, anytime..... I am sorry to hear of your mothers trouble with PN and with her eyes. I take it that your mother doesn't have insurance for medications? I was in this spot myself before I received disability. Write to the company who produces the medication. Often there is a program to pay for the medications. Your doctor may have to write a note of "need" This worked for me with several medications I needed but could not afford.
I also understand about your moms pain. If possible please seek out a pain specialist. There is help there if you will seek it out. Living in pain like that is hard on the person, and very hard on the family to watch it happen. If money is an issue, call the hot line for referrals to doctors who treat, and will see a person on a sliding scale. Pain can be controlled, and there can be a good quality of life if you seek the proper medical care. I really think you are wonderful for trying to help your mom. Your primary care specialist for your mother may be the best place to start to try and find a good pain specialist. There are medications that do not interfer with glaucoma. I do wish you all th best with your family. ginnie |

Thanks for the welcome! My Mom actually has insurance. Her doctor and eye specialist are more concerned about her other health problems and haven't come up with anything that doesn't affect her glaucoma. I figure they are just two people and with thousands online, there might be something they hadn't thought of.
Her neuropathy is a side issue to her COPD, high blood pressure, glaucoma, diabetes, obesity, etc., etc. To me, its not a side issue when its affecting the quality of her life. She can't even take some of these vitamin combinations on here due to med crossover. I got her more Neuragen today but we really are desperate for some answers. |

Thanks for the welcome! It just tears my heart out to see my Mom in so much pain. I am going to read about some of these supplements and hopefully there really are things she can take that won't interact with all her other medications and conditions.
