Hi everyone. I have a nine year old son who was just recently prescribed Adderall to help him focus at school. Before Adderall, he couldn't seem to stay on task long enough to complete his assignments so he was failing several classes. We felt medication was a last resort after trying psychologists, tutoring, changing his diet, vitamins, ect...

He was on the medication for 8 days. He started blinking a lot around day six and then by day 8 he had developed some sort of tic where his eyes involuntarily roll rapidly up and to the left. He simultaneously jerks his head upward trying to correct his vision. We immediately stopped the medication. That was 7 days ago and he is still having this issue. Sometimes it happens every few seconds and sometimes a minute or two will go by between episodes. He's unable to read much of the time because of this because he can't keep his eyes fixed and focused.

I'm utterly beside myself with guilt. I fear rather than helping my son focus at school, I've actually caused him to develop a permanent disability.

We have an appointment scheduled with a pediatric neurologist January 3rd, but I've come here for additional support.

Hello I'm katmae and I would like to welcome you to NT,I know of a lot of kids that are on adderall and have never herd of it affecting them like that,I don't feel that this is you guilty about trying to help your son,you tried otherthings before putting him on meds.and a doc.did that not just you let us know what you find out from the neuro.once again welcome to NT you will find a grate number of people here that are very nolageable here and very will to help

I'm so sorry for what you and your son are going through. I know how hard this must be on you, but please don't allow yourself to take blame for something you were trying to do to help your son.

I hope in time this will go away. For sure go and see a specialist. We had the same issues with our son, and went thru alot of different meds before this last one. Its a patch called Daytrana. It was prescribed by a specialist in ADHD. It works wonders. Our child was behind a whole grade level and is now up to speed with is class. He puts it on in the morning and takes it off after school. It is not cheap, it cost us $70.00 per month with Ins. I hope and pray your child will be ok.
