Default Hi, New Member, a question about being nice

Hi, I'm new here. It's nice to meet you, reading the threads on these forums you all seem very nice. It's good to find some support, even if I don't have a confirmed diagnosis. (I hope it's okay to come here like that. I def have something going on!)
My doctor told me yesterday that the bizarre thing going on with my jaw, ear, and face was probably Trigeminal Neuralgia. It just started giving me "attacks" or whatever they're called 5 days ago. Before, they were just weird migraines. Luckily, I was already scheduled to go to the neurologist for the migraines. I hope the medicine helps, because I don't know if I can deal with this too long!
I'm 27, married for almost 2 years. I'm a massage therapist, but I closed my business in September because it wasn't successful. Hopefully I can work for a good spa soon! I like sewing, reading, comics, and baking. I have a cat.

People who have pain, how do you stay civil to your spouses or other people when you're in pain? Because I just told my husband "Shut ******* up!" in the car yesterday when I was having an attack when he commented "Isn't it strange that it's just one side of your face?" I apologized after and he forgave me. He said he regretted saying it even before I snapped at him, that he knew it wasn't helpful and would be annoying, but I would never say something like that to him seriously normally! Even if I was really mad at him and wanted him to shut up!
I'm just afraid that if I don't get better soon or learn to be nice when I have pain that he'll resent me. Luckily it's not too often. And I'm usually not that mean, just grumpy. And grumpiness is pretty forgivable I think, even if I do want to keep a positive attitude because I don't know how long it'll take to fix this or if it'll get fixed.

Default Hi Cloudsnapper

Welcome to Neuro Talk. You indeed did find a site with lots of compassion. You can talk about anything you need to and feel right at home. We all have lots of different medical issues. Support is 100%.
I hope that you get in to see the best neurologist you can. I know about the condition you may have. There is a support thread for just that topic. Under the search bar, tap and you can tap in the name. TN.
I also understand about being very very crabby at times with pain. Anyone who is in severe pain at times acts like that. I do also, and I am grateful I have some understanding people in my life. Talk to each other as often as you can. I hope that you get DX soon, and that some kind of treatment can be found to help you. Neuro talk will be here for you too. ginnie

Hi There, my name is Melody. Welcome!!!

here is a link to the forum you need.

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/sh...inal+Neuralgia

And yes indeed, pain can make us frustrated, mean, cranky, ALL OF IT. It's hard to be in pain and be civil. My husband has lived with the chronic pain of Peripheral Neuropathy for over 20 years and how he does it is beyond me.

It takes time, (some therapy can't hurt), and most important of all, RELIEF for your pain.

Do you take anything?
Melody

Thanks for the link. I was going to look there.
I just started taking Neurontin yesterday, so no time yet for it to work. And topamax for migraines.

Thanks! I don't know my neurologist yet, but she's the wife of the eye doctor I saw when I had a crazy eye problem, and he was an awesome doctor. I can't imagine he'd be married to a bad doctor

Welcome to NT.

I'm so sorry you are having so much pain. I think our loved ones sometimes blurt out things, trying to help, but actually making you feel worse. They can't help it. At least that's what I believe.

You couldn't find a bunch of nicer people here on the boards. I've been coming here for years.

Post where and when you want, read other's posts. Sometimes they will make you cry, sometimes they will make you laugh, and occasionally they will make you say, "That's it!"

Welcome to the group. There is a great bunch of people here who have helped me cope with so much.

I also have TN. The pain is horrible. It is very difficult to find a way to to be civil when you're in so much pain. I say civil because "nice" has been something I have yet to figure out in pain. When it's really bad, the best thing I can do is not say anything at all. If someone says something stupid, I try to ignore it and focus on breathing or the fact that this level of pain will go down.

People start asking me if I'm okay and all I can do to be civil at all is be silent and nod. Luckily I'm always with someone who knows my situation, so they just explain it's MS. I'm always in pain to some degree, but over time have learned to cope with that level, it's just when there is a sudden attack of pain at a much higher level.

I hope you find a way to deal with this. I also hope they find something that helps you. If the medicine they have you taking doesn't work there are other options.
