Has anyone had an EMG test? I am suppose to have one next week on my left leg, low back, upper extremities, and neck. I have done a lot of research on the internet but still am a lot concerned about this procedure. I have read a lot of horror stories about people having this test and becoming paralyzed, nerve damage and etc. Much fear of this test!

I agree. Some people have no trouble and others do. I had the EMG/NCV testing a number of years ago. I will not have another one. No need to either as I know that I have progressed as CMT does. I always said that if I wasn't dancing when I went in, I was dancing when I went out. It got to be very uncomfortable.

Hi,
I have had many and have not found them painful or uncomfortable at all. I did ask my primary care doc because I had also heard horror stories....his answer was, some docs are poorly trained and/or have with old equipment and they are the ones who give the test a bad name...he said, .if you go to a reputable doc that was recommended by your doc and they have good credentials, there should not be a problem with pain. Honestly, I was surprised at how easy it was. Obviously, some folks have had problems with pain but I just wanted to give you some positive news. Welcome to the forum and I wish you an easy, pain free test and I hope it gives you info that is useful. Take care, Diandra |

Yes, it can depend on the person doing the test. I forgot to mention that. Lots of other things too. it was a reputable neurologist in my case but he did not do the test. It was his assistant and I suspect that had something to do with it.
Also, with a CMTer it can vary with the individual.
