Sounds like an AFO, ankle foot orthotic. These can be helpful. They do keep you from working the peroneal muscles as much so will contribute to atrophy. Of course if you already can't work those muscles...

I'm going to work with KT tape again...I tried it a while back, but going to work with it again...buying on amazon and will use for ankle and knee primarily...when I tried it years ago my issues were not as bad as they've become....grrrrrrrr
