Hi, I stumbled upon your board while I was searching a new Dr. for my husband to see. He was hit by a car going 55 and even though he was in his huge Ford F350, the truck spun around so violently that he ended up with a "roller coaster" type concussion. He was fine that day, but the symptoms hit the following day and every day since. On Oct. 8th it will be 2 years of non-stop severe headaches. He has tried nearly everything in his quest to find a cure. He has been seeing the same neurologist this whole time but is just now going to HCNC in Minneapolis next tuesday. He is on the maximum dose of Gabapentin allowed. He takes these pills everywhere and takes them like 6 times a day. Without them his headaches get unbearable and then he's playing catch-up for days. He says these drugs only take the edge off never fully alleviating the pain which is mainly pressure behind his eyes. He's tried SSRI's, Chiropractic, Accupuncture, botox, Specialized massage therapy on small muscles in his neck and skull, etc. He has not tried any herbal remedies. This is affecting not only his life but mine and the kids as well. He will not take time off of work as he is a major work-a-holic. He never gave his head time to heal or rest after the initial accident. He has the classic other symptoms too of not finding the right words, loss of concentration, anger, etc. Just looking for any ideas or things to try. Worried that after 2 years this will be his new "normal"....

As Lara said--there are some great people on the Traumatic Brain Injury/PCS forum that could be of wonderful help to you. Honestly, I have found better help there than anything I have found in the medical establishment.
I am also (well, I was) a bit of a workaholic and very career oriented. I had to overcome that tendency to really try to really, truly recover from my head injury. In fact, in that aspect I think it has maybe changed my life for the better. I was not smart about aspects of my early recovery, but I do think that one can really help the later stages by slowing down. |

Hello and welcome to NT!
Firstly, thank you for looking out for your husband: we TBI folks can be very hard on our caregivers. I was injured in an mva that sounds quite like your husband's. Has your husband's neck been examined as a possible contributor to his headaches? No doubt he suffered whiplash. Mine was so violent that it damaged my spine, creating instability. As a consequence, I really battle headache. While not possible in my case, the neck can often be stabilized with surgical, or other, interventions. Anyway, it's something that you might want to look into. Speech, cognitive, drug and psychological therapies are available that might help with your husband's other symptoms. Sadly, he does not sound like the type who is likely to accept, readily, his TBI and make the necessary accommodations. In that case, I really suggest that you put a premium on caring for yourself and your children. You might want to consider joining a caregiver support group. www.biausa.org My best to you. ![]() |
