Hi All,
You will come to discover I am a professional Klutz, but that's for another time. I have had RSD since 1991 after three surgeries on a broken toe.

In March, I walked off a step, rolled my foot and ankle, then landed on it. I broke 2 bones, tore tendons off other bones which took bone fragments with them. Other ligaments were torn as well. No surgery on this mess, just a cast.

Seven months later I am still in serious pain. It feels and looks nothing like RSD. After being sent to several specialists,the diagnosis for the pain is scar tissue and possibly a bone fragment.

Surgery is the only solution and even that is "Iffy." My doctor told me surgery could help, not help at all or make things worse. He wasn't even addressing the RSD issue when he made the statement! I know what those statistics are.

The decision is up to me now. Pain is sitting at a solid nine, tempting me to try almost anything. While I successfully use pain management techniques for the RSD, nothing is helping the other. For now I am holding off so I can learn more. That's how I discovered this website.

If anyone has been through a situation like this or has any advice, I would love to hear it.

I am so sorry to hear that you have RSD . I have been suffering from RSD since March 2007 (nearly 2 years) in my left leg and right arm, I developed it when I was 12 years old - I am now 13. I have had surgery on my RSD leg and I didn't have positive results, unfortunately I ended up with complications. I don't want to scare you by any means, I just wanted to make you aware of what happened to me. Most PM Doctors when performing surgery, suggest to give you a nerve block beforehand to try and combat any increase in pain and also try and stop any complications from occuring. I really hope that, should you decide to have surgery, it goes well and that you get some benefits from it.

Your best bet would to post this message onto the RSD forum (Weegot5kiz has provided you the link) has many of the members there have had some sort of surgery or procedure and hopefully they will be able to give you some more insight and offer some suggestions that may help.

If you need anything, please let me know - I know how scary it can be dealing with this condition and has the saying goes I have been there and got the t-shirt unfortunately.

Yes Ur luck sounds about like mine.. Anyhow in 2005 at work I fell on a concrete step stepping up and missed and hit my kneecap on the sharp edge of the step and broke left patella in half. One surgery screw and nut and then a bone graft for the patella because it wasn't healing properly.. Then in Mar 2008 I slipped on my back porch and instead of falling on my kneecap that had surgery twice, I tried to catch myself backwards and fractured my right foot or it could have been the 5 dollar shampoo bottle that fell on my foot in the shower the next day.. Anyhow they put me on crutches and said go ahead and work and keep weight off of it for 6 weeks, try working and standing for 12 hour shifts without putting your foot down>>HAHA When I went back after six weeks it still hadn't healed any.. (surprise surprise DOC) They put a full cast from knee to foot and didn;t really cast the part of the foot hanging out that was actually broken..Well 6 weeks later they said it was better so they took the cast off and said in 2 or 3 days I should be walking very well and I could go back to work in a week or so.. Not!!! Still couldn't walk on foot so they sent me to my regular doc who treated me for gout and then the ortho said he thought I had sprained my ankle so after that I still was in a walking shoe and still couldnt walk they decided it was rsd after my physical therapist told my ortho doc before this that that was what was wrong with me the whole time. He finally decided to believe me that I couldn't walk!.. SunshineGirl ps. Do you realize how many times I have stubbed that foot since then and I know I have broken a toe since then also??
