Confused B12 Defiency... looking for someone to talk to

I've been diagnosed with B12 defiency about a month ago... I was actually glad it was something because if it wasn't it just ment I was loosing my mind and that wasn't going to fly. But now, I am having difficulty with my dr and don't feel I am getting the proper treatment.

I really wanted to talk to others with my situation. Anyone?

Hello Magenta,
My story is so long I'll save it for now. I also had trouble with doctors - even one I trusted for over 20 years. My first idea is that you must find a doctor who will give you the tests you need. What is your B12 level and did they do an intrinsic antibody test? All the information you need is here... you just have to be willing to read read read. The neurologist who finally suggested a B12 test was seeing me for a possible diagnosis of ms. Also I was within 3 days of having extensive surgery on my cervical spine - which would probably have killed me. So I know all too well the frustrations of finding treatment. One thing I will say is that doctors seem to know very very little about vitamin deficiencies. The neurologist (second one I saw) who finally thought of the B12 level test told me that I was the first pernicious anemia case he had seen in 10 years. Unbelievable, isn't it??? Let me know more about you. If you feel more comfortable you can send me a private message; it's up to you. I promise I'll respond. Nancy

Arrow Nervous? Constant headache, thoughts of death?

Hi,
I went on a crash diet years back. I depleted my vitamin B (all of them). I spent so much money trying to find a doctor who could tell me what was wrong. No doctor ever asked about my eating habits... I was ready to jump off a bridge (really). I had a contant headache in the back of my head, morbid thoughts, very nervous, crying with fits of rage. I'm sweet and clam so I know there was something going on and it was bad. I prayed and found out I needed B. I went to the drug store and bought a good B-Complex and took as directed. Within 3 days I was my old self. I think maybe Doctors don't want us to know most things that go bad with us are due to bad nutritian. It's easy to fix and bad for business. Ha! Just kidding. doctors are good to have around if they're a good caring one. Doctors should ALL have to take a year of nutrician and how it affects the body. OR, let's all go to a nutritianist first. (sorry for any bad spelling)

Confused headaches back of head

bren-bren

So, you had headaches at the back of your head BEFORE you began B vitamins. I have had headaches all of my life, but since taking mega doses of b12 I have an almost constant headache at the back of my head! and hiccups too.

This is weird.

Confused dr's bleh!

Yea, I feel like I am at my witts end with drs. I went to my GP back in january with major anxiety and depression that was triggered by my daughter having lice... I freaked out way more then usual. But was also having physical problems like shaking, weak... I also have hypoglocemia so I thought my blood sugar was low. My dr thought it was all anxiety and check my blood sugar but that was fine. I called her months later still shaking and weak but mentaly feeling great! She said it was probably still the anxiety. This made no sense to me because I wasn't stressed out or anything. But that was it, she seemed to not be interested because I told her I wouldn't take antidepression meds becasue they only made me worse.

I kept feeling worse, my eyes were bothering me, I was very tired, shaking everyday. (I take adavan to help the shaking ... does that make sense that it helps?) I was also having days where I couldn't think straight and I was very foggy... feeling high.

Well my insurance changed right as I was planning to go to the drs and insist on her checking my blood for animia and other defincenies. Because I was doing major research and talking to friends and finding that my symptoms were the same as forms of anemia. The new dr gave me a list of blood tests checking for fatique. B12 def came up but all she said was take a suppliment and come in for a follow up in a few weeks.

When I came in for a follow up she acted like she didn't remember she asked me to come in. And when I asked her for a B12 shot she acted like this wasn't something she thought I needed but gave it to me anyway. SHE is the one who told me how serious this is, but isn't taking the proper steps to help me. She doesn't seem to be concerned with WHY I have this and what my other symptoms are. She doesn't ask me any questions at all.

I started feeling crappy again this past week (two weeks after my first shot) so I made an appointment to come in and get another one. I told her I was getting shaky again and that the adavan works a bit. She hears adavan and says that if thats working that she doesn't think it's the b12 and thinks I should see a therapist! OMG, in my opinion and this just my opinion... but if b12 effects your nervous system and it causes tremors as a side effect (something she doesn't seem to know) then why wouldn't adavan work??? it calms the nerves!!! I was so angry when I left her office. I know myself. I know I am not depressed or stressed out. I am not having anxiety... what would I go to a therapist for... what would I say???

So here I am, feeling like I have no dr. Monday morning I am going to call my moms Hemotologist and first see if they take my insurance then make an appointment for as early as possible. I am sick of talking to dr's who don't know crap about this problem. I think what i am most ****** about... is my GP knows how serious this is and yet never thought to send me to a specialist... espeicially if she doesn't know enough about it!

like, "oh, this is very serious, you could end up with brain damage, but I don't know enough about it but I'll just NOT take care of you myself!" he he I know that doens't make sense but you get the gist... lol

I know this is a long one... but I really needed to vent

thanks for all your responses. I am really happy I found this site

Default doctor dilemma

oh my magenta272 -- you are having a time of it. I understand completely. Venting helps, so you found an excellent place for it. The frustrations concerning doctors are unbelievable. I'm nearing one year since the numbness started in my hands and feet - my first indicators of what would eventually turn out to have been pernicious anemia.

But before that diagnosis, I saw at least five doctors. I need to see one now and I have no intention of returning to the ones previously seen for several reasons -- primarily lack of knowledge and lack of any professional concern for my well being.

I have no answer; just empathy. I'm going to try to do something tomorrow, Monday - exactly what???? don't know. It's bad enough to feel awful without the medical profession misdirecting you, or ignoring you, or questioning your sanity. Not to mention insurance issues - another nightmare.

The only people I have any good to say about right now are Pharmacists and Nurses... they seem to know more than most doctors. I'll even throw in a good word for some DO's ... There, now I've said my piece too.

Don't give up; I won't until I get the right answers. Everything I have learned has been right here on the forum.

Take good care and try to keep your chin up.

Yea... we have to figure out a lot of things ourselves. I know it's frustrating. I've had my share of misguided advice, abuse and stigma for being a MVA patient. My experiences because of the 10-2000 accident has changed me forever... not necessarily for the better either.

I do take a B-12 supplement. I can tell it helps. Keep reading. knowledge is empowering

Default hello

I am seeing that as my days go on and I talk to more people telling my story about my dr telling me that I need therapy I get more and more angry at the situation. I look back on my medical history and all the problems I have had to diagnose myself, between my constent yeast infections to NOW a burning pain in my ankle that still hasn't officially been diagnosed as anything but possibly a bone spur, to now with my B12 def.

The internet seems to be my dr but sorry to say I would rather hear it from someone who went to SCHOOL for MEDICAL for 8 YEARS! and gets paid a large amount to do a job I expect them to do! I went to school for graphic design, I do graphic design and I do it well. I do what I am paid to do!!! That is whats expected of me... and that is what I expect from my drs. It seems to be the only profession that can get away with not doing their job and still collect a very large paycheck!

Thanks for all your responses... this site has really helped me find some peace in this mess. thank you all so much!
