Teeth Rush Limbaugh ... and a raccoon

ROFL! Which in itself is amazing as I have been at my wit's end with a raccoon problem. It's under my home and nested in the duct work. I could hear the babies from a vent in my living room quite some time back. April maybe? I thought maybe they had left...until I turned on my air conditioner this weekend.

NO AIR coming out of 2 vents. Daughter and I peeked down one using a mirror and flashlight, and the ducts are obliterated! Now I have heard it (them?) under the bathtub in my guest bathroom and the stench is overwhelming.

So...I started a quest for help. Obviously I need to have what I think is going to be some major repair but first have to get rid of the momma raccoon and her babies! HA!

I called last night and this morning to our city animal control. First person wasn't helpful and said, call a pest control agency. Today the lady was nice and told me they could not trap a wild animal for me, but said to do the following....
  1. Soak rags in ammonia and throw them under the house.
  2. But bright lights under there.
  3. Put a boombox or radio under there and turn the channel to talk radio.

...and then after 3 or 4 days put newspaper in the trench where the raccoon dug her way in and check to see if she comes back.

Well okay, fine. Pulling out my hair. Started to search the internet for other stories and my oh my, what a problem raccoons are! I ran into a blog from one raccoon victim who had me laughing out loud by the end of the story. It's LONG but worth it!

Oh and by the way....I looked up the contact email for Animal Control and sent them a message that I would try what they suggested as I am at wit's end, and wanted to share this guy's story with them and just how well the ammonia, lights and radio worked for him!

I'll be darned if immediately THE head person mailed right back and said WE WILL HELP! You've been misinformed! Big sigh of relief here.

Anyway....how Rush Limbaugh saved this man from the raccoon infestation he had. LOLOL! http://blogs.salon.com/0001772/stori...onStories.html

Oh, but first...my apologies to ANYONE who may be offended by the writing. Still and all...I thought it was hilarious.

ROFL! Please try to ignore the sounds in the wall when you are here. We THINK it's flying squirrels again but not sure.

I KNEW you'd respond and probably be the only one, LOL!

Actually, I turned the radio on to a station that's all about talk radio. I have no idea who the little buggers listened to and it's on again today.

ROFL! There are flying squirrels in the wall in MY room?

Hey Doody!

OMG! The blog account was very entertaining!

We are having a similar problem, except the wildlife is residing in a nearby out building. We have a momma a two little ones! So cute! Yet... they have decided the entire lawn is theirs and our Shepherd is going wild, trying to get to them. Her bark is insanely loud and while otherwise very well-behaved, she is intensely territorial at home. Nobody ever sleep as long as she detects the ongoing "invasion" of her territory.

We are doing our best to keep her from them while we figure out how to best guarantee their permanent departure. We don't want any injuries (for all) and/or any potential illnesses passed on to our precious pet! We'd like them to depart willingly, alive and uninjured!

Wish their momma would take them elsewhere. No muss, no fuss!

We will get it figured out...soon!
Talk radio is a great idea! Yet, since we have no power in the out building -- we'd need to obtain a boombox and batteries.
I was hoping the "preacher's special formula" was readily available at a local farm and garden store! May need to write to him? Lol!

And...you know... you might need something from the preacher for Alffe's home? (If nothing else, an interesting hostess gift?)

I am glad you have been offered some help with your raccoon situation! I hope that is an "easy fix" for you!
I'm anxious to hear the rest of your raccoon story!

Stay cool!

Well thank you ((DejaVu)). LOL I thought it was hilarious as well. That guy is a pretty good writer.

So, I guess at this point my only advice for you is....

ROFL

Ammonia soaked rags
Bright lights
Talk radio.

Sheesh, I just want them out. it smells so bad in my guest bathroom so the nest must be directly underneath.

Oh wait, are you talking about the 'fox urine' he talks about. Actually, one of the best critter repellants I've used is that Liquid Fence. But it doesn't say a darn thing about raccoons. http://www.liquidfence.com/

There are a lot of sites selling fox urine products but I have to agree with the preacher...how the heck do they get that stuff?

Yes, he had mentioned the fox urine solution!
And then...he'd added the "mock up" of his very own solution (pictured in his blog). Silly man! (He has a good sense of humor!)

I am quite sure I can locate the "fox stuff" locally, as there are many retail places in this region with stuff like that! Yet, it will definitely not be my first attempt at a solution!

Thanks for the link to "liquid fence." I will take a look at it!

I cannot imagine using ammonia in your home/ductwork.
I hope it does not come to that for you!

Hope you can stay cool enough until all air conditioning, in your castle and in your chariot, are running well.

ROF Doody! That was hilarious!

We don't have racoons here so have never even heard of this happening. The worst we get are possums who can do a similar thing, but are usually fairly easy to trap and relocate.

But... my mind boggled with images of how they might harvest fox urine!

Let me know what sort of music your racoon prefers.

The radio station's Listener's Advisory Board resides in ducts of Doody's home!

(((Doody))), sweety, you wanna know what kind of music your raccons despise!

We use a product up North called Deer Fortress...to keep the deer off my flowers. It is made of dried blood from some animal.

It upset the cats quite a bit for at least a week, when I put two canisters in my large pots on the shore. They wouldn't come down and sit with us. After a time they caved, but I think they were disturbed by the dead smell-- which we couldn't perceive.

Alot easier than fox urine, IMO !

(if you decide to try it...Amazon has the best prices. --up to 1/2 retail).

We have had to lure animals out from under our study at times (mostly possums).
I do it with tasty food. Feed them for a while, like a week, and then one night stay up, and when they come out...block off the opening! That has always worked for us.
Once a raccoon went into our garage (which is not really a garage), when we were working outside. I lured him out, with a turkey leg...he was happy as a clam!
