I soaked 1 C fava beans for 24 hours in spring water(drain and rinse well)
Then rinsed and drained them 3 times a day for 4 days
Peel the outer coat off the beans and cut off any bad spots/ rinse off/ let drain
Mash the beans well and put in a glass jar with a tight closing lid.
LABEL : Fava Bean Sprout tincture / and the date
Add 3/4 C brandy . Close lid tight and shake this a couple times a day for a month
Strain thru a fine tea strainer..into another clean jar
Press mash with a spoon to remove all the precious liquid as possible and tightly close lid
Let this jar stand for 24 hours so all the sediment goes to the bottom
Then, using a turkey baster(new/ not used for meat) or a syringe...extract the clear liquid from the top down to almost the sediment and put this into a dropper bottle (dark if possible). The sediment is usable.. .. I just use it first
(my dose is about 1/4 teas ...1/2 a dropperful) and I just put the sediment in a small bottle marked sediment...you just don't want the sediment in your tincture. It will discolor it and make it not last as long.
I still have not found a chemist around here to test things for me...so I don't know how much l-dopa is in this compared to the fava top tincture that I make from plants in the garden...(fava tops tincture 2 drops = 1mg.) I always recommend starting any new supplement out slow and small dose.... I started with just a few drops. The tinctures work faster if I hold them in my mouth for a minute...kind of works like a sublingual I think. Each person will react differently . It is interesting at my house, dad seems to have an allergic reaction to fava beans as far as eating them with a meal...he will feel itchy, but he doesn't react to the fava tops tincture...it helps his restless legs calm down. Haven't let him try the fava sprout tincture as yet.
GOOD LUCK WITH THIS A FEW OF YOU LAB RATS OUT THERE!
(makes my whiskers wiggle......but it keeps my hand from tremor and my leg still)
Aunt Bean you are using dried beans to start with right? mashing these is difficult because even after a 4 day soak they are still pretty hard....

You do not soak them for four days...soak them in filtered or spring water for 24 hrs/ then rinse and drain 3 times a day. They will begin to sprout and some will have long "Noses" by then. After the 4 days, soak about 1/2 hr ...it makes peeling the skins off easier/ cut away any bad places you come across (dark) rinse again and steam about 5 minutes . They will be easily chew-able for dosing . They freeze well in a ziplock or plastic container for quick snacks or to mash for "sprout balls" (check previous posts) If using for tincture ...steam only a minute or so to "set " the nutrients (like blanching vegies for the freezer) ..then mash and add brandy. Do a month of shaking /strain / wait 24 hours /and siphon off clear liquid and bottle)This is a great way to carry l-dopa (though isn't as strong as plant tops tincture.
For home use.... eating sprouts or sprout balls is a more efficient way to supplement.
Hope this helps. Have a great day.

There are over 400 fava bean seeds planted on Bean Acres now...many more to go. The rains have been coming every few days and keeping the ground too soggy to work. Kept busy in the greenhouse today (filling more flats with potting soil, weeding beds, cleaning walkways ,and getting ready to get a load of of sawdust . Dad and I managed to get a load of bamboo cut/ loaded and home this week. Anxious for the ground to dry out some so we can get another load ( a farmer cut down a small forest of them not too far away). It is beautiful and will make great trellis's and fencing for beans to climb.( Have several new varieties of pole green beans this year to try.) EAT MORE BEANS !!
Started some tomato and pepper seeds in the house last nite ( they need bottom heat to germinate and an unheated greenhouse that goes down to almost the outside temperature is not very suitable for them (it has gotten down to 21 degrees in there /17 outside.....too cold for me. ..let alone tomatoes. The water hose has frozen several times
Still doing well on Rhodiola, several friends are too. I am nearly back to my old energy level/ went to a Contra Dance (like square dancing) last week and danced every dance for almost 2 hrs. Hadn't gone in a very long time..usually danced every other one. Feel good. Got alot of work ahead, clearing soil for planting, getting the chicken coup re-vamped for this year (peeps are in tractor supply already...seems very early. They are so cute...but I am not ready for them yet!)
I read that sesame seeds help to prevent loss of muscle control and mental decline in Huntington's Disease...has anyone used them for PD????

We have had so much wet weather...it is hard to prepare the ground to put in more favas this year. Just got a new 25lb bag of sproutable organic favas and am anxious to get more planted. The 11th and 12th of March are good for above ground crops according to the farmers almanac. We are supposed to have a pretty day today (still only around 50 degrees...but the best we will get this week) So, I will be out there bundled up and trying to get a few more row spots cleared from weeds that have come up. Have a large tiller now , but the ground is way too wet to use it. Favas have heat intolerance (like alot of people I know) and want to do their growing while it's cooler. I am still collecting fava flowers and tops out of the greenhouse to tincture...so the greenhouse experiment has gone well. If I can't get more ground area ready today..I will plant favas in flats and transplant them out when the ground is workable. Pray for at least a short dry spell so the ground can be worked...
doing it all by hand with a mattock is exhausting to say the least. Have a great day.

Cold morning here in east TN ....20 degrees and snowing. Haven't been out to feed bunnies yet. Got 3 more rows dug in the garden and a raised bed ready for favas on Monday before the rain started again. Was about to sore to sleep Monday nite from mattacking all of it. Wanted to get alot more done, but just couldn't do it...the ground was still slightly wet and hard to prepare. But....Monday rain or shine more favas will get in the ground. I will have to plant some in flats in the greenhouse to transplant later when the ground is less wet. Would love to have a gathering with anyone who could come this summer...anyone interested? Have a great day....Aunt Bean

Yesterday I went to an organic grower's school and took a class on growing Turmeric. It was very well presented and sounds do-able with the help of the cold greenhouse to extend the growing season. I use turmeric capsules and they really do help symptoms...if I can grow this root.... that is chopped, dried and ground / or used fresh it will be just one more thing that will be a savings in dollar output for supplements. Besides being fresh, organically grown and cared for on Bean Acres...I have never had fresh turmeric and can't wait to get my precious little root started so that around October I will have my first taste. The presenter said it has the texture of a carrot and her daughter loves to just chew on pieces and asks for them constantly. Think what it might do for PD (a piece beside the bed for a midnite snack helping the inflamation and pain of waking up in the morning...who knows where this will lead. Probably to a lot of yellow tooth brushes!!
