Default assistance from fellow man

Sorry to hear of your fall, but delighted to hear of individuals helping you. ANd in hopes your shoulder problem is resolved--sounds very painful. Best, madelyn

I wear kneepads so as to save my knees which have develped thick callouses as have my elbows, and have shed blood hundeds of times now over the last few years i am in permanent pain from falling. My arms are all cut up and bruised, but I will NOT use a wheelchair. I want to die standing up. Fluch this fluching disease. It will take me, but on MY terms. Hi ol'cs,
Do you use a walking frame?
If not perhaps try one.
Also maybe go and see an occupational therapist who sees a lot of PWP.
They have a lot of good ideas.

Chuck;

PLEASE use a cane or a walker! Like the song says "you gotta know when to hold 'em, know when to fold em" !! I use a wheel chair on occasion, mostly for longer walks or going to screenings where it is necessary to stand, WHere many of my falls occur. BEsides its cool being pushed around by 3- 20something Calif, beauties (my daughters!)
be smart not stubborn! NO sense busting your posterior for no good reason!!
You do know that Dr Lozano is one of the best DBS surgeons anywhere!! (He is located in Toronto!!)

Love ya bud!!

Charlie

Default walking frame

if what you mean as a walking frame, as the normal walker, i have one. with brakes even, but can't use it in the confines of the cold basement where i now live (i was beaten on to the point where they drove me to canada and left me for my 87 year old mom to take care of me ,(nice wife and kids ha!!!!), and I still give all my money to them, without ne're a thank you or a phone call. I use two canes but always seem to be falling dow with a "twist" of my body.
I rarely get a good night sleep because of the pain. i have to lie flat on my back. It's strange though, i walk onlywith difficulty, but i still have my drivers license and have never been in an accident the 37 years that i have been a licenced driver. Without the ability to get away on my own, i'd surely go outof my mind! MY wife has formally left me, she couldn't handle MY disease...and my kids , they could care less for an old acting, young looking "father". I have nobody now, so i can say PD is all about loss. I'm financially secure thanks to the company that i worked for, but life is grey and without love of any kind. I wanted to suicide seriously, about 7 times, but i couldn't do it because of the children. Life with PD only gets worse as time goes on. And loss, loss, loss.
Well i still have afew people that I can have a laugh with, who don't look at me funny, or treat me like i don't want to be treated (with pity, or in any way that shows that i'm ill,or "different") so i can't complain. There are millions of peope in this world who would truly love to change places with me.cs

Default Sorry, Charlie!

My middle name is NOT "Grace." I fall backwards, too, Charlie - only fell forward once and hit my chest on a footboard to the bed (MORE than you need to know, but I had a black and blue boob for weeks! lol) I was just glad it wasn't my face.

And Hip, Hip hooray for padding of the gluteus maximus - it has saved my life. However, landing in a puddle or ending up on one's butt can be most embarrassing (and can break your tailbone, which is VERY painful and there are no splints for that part of the anatomy).

cs - I am elated to see you posting again. Don't be a stranger. And listen to brother Charlie, not me, about using a cane or walker. But here's a tip, the cane can be more of a hinderance than a help, unless its one of thhose 3-pronged ones that can stand by itself. Here, however are some choices::
folding canes -http://www.walkingequipment.com/foldingp.htm
Very stylish, andn can easily store in your bag or glove compartment when not using it.

seat canes - yes - no joke - a cane that folds out into a 300-lb. seate capacity! http://www.walkingequipment.com/seatcanes.htm

3/4-prong or quad canes these are best. This way you don't have to look for a place to hang those dreaded canes and are less likely to go off and forget them. Note the 2nd example of quad canes - no spider-legged looking thing - very discrete tip
http://www.walkingequipment.com/quad-tripodcanesly.htm -

Be sure to get the right handle! Avoid those curved down ones (your hand slips right off them) - knobbed handles are useless, too. Those at a near 90 degree angle covered with non-slip material are great.
examples: http://www.walkingequipment.com/alum...shioncanes.htm

Walking sticks - some find this is better for PwP - maybe those who have used them can tell us why.

Walkers - My daughter was so kind to buy me a walker years ago (it makes for a great clothes hanger in my closet) lol
I got one that has wheels (a MUST for PwP's) and a basket to hold your purse or jacket - and in royal blue. HOWEVER, they don't fold down to a managable size to transport.
http://www.walkingequipment.com/rollatorswalkers.htm
(check out the 3-wheeled one at the bottom of the above link. Kind of makes you feel as it you are driving a harley!)

sorry - got carried away - glad you are OK Charlie. Do you know where most falls occur?
Yep - the bathroom -- beware and be extra cautious when in wet areas.

Hugs to you chasmo
Peggy

cs- I'm the type that immediately looks for solutions, but I know that they don't always exist and that the best we can do is offer a sympathetic ear. You've got several of those. No pity, unless for all of us. Reminds me of the leper colony in Papillion (I think). Awful nice folks once you got to know them.
