Default Thank you!

Thank you Bryanna, your post is so wonderfully thorough and thoughtful, AND SO INFORMATIVE. It is extremely helpful to get advice from one who really knows.
The citrus fruit warning is surprising - citrus feels so cleansing, but in future I will try to curb my cravings for oranges and grapefuits and ditto juices. It will not be easy, but I am very glad to be warned in time. I want my teeth to last as long as the rest of me.

With many more thanks,

birte

Default Extractions

My upper left two back molars were extracted last summer, after they simply crumbled to pieces. The second extraction was preceeded by a viciously painful infection in the root. I'm eager to avoid that experience again.

Default for Bryanna

Many many thanks.Sorry to be late in my response.Haven`t logged in for a few days...but your input is invaluable. My gums are receding yet I have used an electric toothbrush for some time now, having found that the action needed for manual is tricky.A hygienist told me I had actually brushed too hard which has helped expose the nerves.I could weep, honestly. It all semed to happen overnight, one minute lovely teeth, the next decay and much painful treatment.
Two days ago two more teeth literally crumbled. At dentist tomorrow for root treatment on the abscessed tooth. Not looking forward to it.
But truly, thanks again for such helpful advice.
Parkinson`s Disease..? Seems to get everywhere.

It looks to me like this decaying and crumbling is early onset teeth loss to go along with early onset PD. Our teeth aren't holding up due to medication and other metabolic processes, along with inability to keep up with the best care of them.

People get plastic surgery, people get gastric bypasses, I am trying to reconcile that it might be better to get dentures. I would like to know if anyone has done this or knows anything about dentures and PD.

Is it more difficult to chew? Could they increase the chance of choking?

thanks,
Paula

Default Do you drink carbonated beverages?

Even non-sugar ones?

I don't drink soda on a regular basis now. But I've had my share of soda when we get a pizza or eat fast food.

I don't buy it regularly and being retired I'm not tempted at work with a soda machine. But it was one of the things I thought of when the blood brain barrier was discussed. My mother was a Coca Cola addict [no alcohol] but soda everyday. We always had it growing up....did we want soda or milk for dinner? Who knew until later? Seems to me Coca Cola could burn a hole through lots of things.

Default Oh!

I'm not surprised. Coke and sweet soda has to be bad for both teeth and stomach.
But how about beer? Beer is fizzy too!
I hope the natural fizz of good beer is harmless. But generic beer that tastes like beer flavored seltzer has got to be as bad as soda.
And natural fizzy water must be as safe as still water, or is it?
My daily treat this past year has been a small glass of Tonic Water with dinner. We call the drink Tonic and Tonic, and I don't even miss the gin. I can't drink wine, fruit juices are too sweet to drink with food, and I have never liked any soda - other than Tonic Water.....
My guess is that it is no better for me than Coke or Pepsi etc..
Bummer!!

It's not the fizz, it's the phosphoric acid found in most softdrinks. Your tonic water probably is OK but read the label.

Default It is not listed.

Thank you, Everett, I wish you were right. Phosphoric acid is not mentioned in the ingredients, but it is sure to be in the carbonated water/seltzer the Tonic water is made from. I'm giving it up as a daily drink, not just for that, but for the high fructose corn syrup in it. I usually read labels, but this one I'd let slide. No more!

Default Bemm...?

I am crying with laughter at your expletive...Bummer!!!
I can just imagine you spitting it out in disgust.Thank you. You`ve given me a brpoad grin after my day at the dentists.
Had root treatment and had to have x ray on my crumbled tooth...well the remains anyway.
And guess what? No word of a lie...whilst I was in the chair,a small filling from one of my front teeth rolled out.

"My poor old gob is almost empty !!!! "

I`ll soon be back on milk feeds and mush.
This disease sure isn`t going the way I planned it to...

I asked if I was brushing too vigorously with my electric gadget [believe me,I clean and polish my teeth as if I`m cutting diamonds...]it sounds like a building site in my bathroom when I get the electric flosser, brush.hydro interdens cleaner on the job.]

Came out one time and my kids offered me a hard helmet to wear..lol

All I can think of,apart from what has been mentioned here,is that I grind my teeth at night [there`s already been a thread about this so won`t dwell on it]
so....

What with the gadgets and the grinding of gnashers, ithe tapping when my tremors start, the oohs and ahs when I get dystonia....its a wonder I have n`t been prosecuted for noise pollution.

And on a final note..wish me luck tomorrow...2 years since I`ve seen my neuro [I just kept forgetting to book to see him] so I am probably in for some ear bashing.

I`ll just smile sweetly.... and he`ll leg it out the door. ho hum...
