Default Global pledge for parkinsons

I don't know whether this has been posted before or not, but this is something that is urgent, that can help unite the global PD community, and is worth doing.

It is the first step in PwP gaining a truly global voice.

http://www.parkinsonspledge.org/

Please sign the pledge, and get everyone you know who is affected by PD to sign too....., pass it to friends and family, health professionals and neuros, and ask them to do the same............. wherever you are in the world, this gives you a voice.

Yes by all means sign the pledge,to show support but what is needed is action,not signatures.
Patient engagement,informed facilitated advocacy

Swept, I absolutely agree, the pledge will show the global patient support but sets out no goals that will make a difference - something that is really needed.

All ideas on what those should be and how to acheive them are welcome, so far we have been working in our separate corners of existence and expertise, now is the time to grow a global movement, and consolidate some of the wonderful connections that we made in Glasgow, and start to reach the people beyond that.......... we are the people in a hurry, the ones who feel and live the urgency.....

This document is important to all of us. I know that it does not state who wrote the document, but it is result of the World Parkinson's Conference (WPC) that was just held in Glasgow, Scotland.

At the bottom of the document you are allowed to see/know; 1) in what country the signers live, 2) see how many have signed the Pledge (at this moment in time 1,427, from 40 countries). You can also search for a specific person, etc. by entering the word/name in the search box and sort by country name; if you only want to see names from the "united states of america" (322) you can do this too.

No just for PWPs to sign, but anyone...excerpts of parts of the Pledge:

We, the undersigned members of the global Parkinson’s community:
  • acknowledge with respect and gratitude the importance and originality of the Global Declaration on Parkinson’s Disease, initiated in Geneva, Switzerland on May 26-27, 1997 by the World Health Organization’s Working Group on Parkinson’s Disease , later signed by representatives of the WHO’s six regions;
  • believe that the Global Declaration provides a solid basis upon which to build additional levels of aspiration for the Parkinson’s community around the world, including calling on governments and private funding institutions to help underwrite the commitments of (i) supporting the science that will lead us to the cure; and (ii) providing the care that will assure those who battle Parkinson’s today with the best possible quality of life;

We therefore call upon governments, health agencies of the United Nations system, and patient-oriented non-governmental organizations (NGOs) throughout the world to:

  • actively encourage innovation and collaboration among academic and research institutions and the commercial sector, so that invested money is used effectively and scientific advances are rapidly translated into available therapies;
  • invest special attention and resources to the condition of emerging countries, where the needs of people with chronic conditions such as Parkinson’s are often superseded by competing health and social needs, and where available resources are too often rudimentary and inadequate to the task.
