I stopped azilect and then tried it again. It seemed to do a little better for me this time. It seemed to help my handwriting improve a little and I think it helped the mirapex last a little longer. The down side? I think it made me gain weight, too.

Hi,
been on azilect 1 mg since dx in Oct. 07...taken with sinemet 25/100 3 times daily. I still have slow days however dystonia is far less severe...tremors are slight now...good and bad periods..you all know. My point is that I attended support group at Johns Hopkins in Dec. point made by neuro was that they saw overall reduction in the progression of the disease. People that started out using Azilect sooner benefited more....still early in studies. i was placed on it right away. this is the short version...Another way I understood it to be was that everyone has a different base line stage 1..2 etc. Azilect will not stop or reverse symptoms just slow them down so less medication is needed. I'm sure you know it is a neuro protector....I understood this to be preserving what one all ready has and slowing loss. Hope this helps....sorry i am little foggy right now. Eric aka kman |

thanks Mary,
Do you find yourself writing smaller? My writing looks like a Doctors. Even I can't read it some times. LOL I find that I write smaller. Quality is bad also. Do you feel you are the same as a yr ago, or not? I'm interested, as I think I stayed the same ( which sucks as it is ) for about 9 months, but now I see a little change of getting worst. More shaking, which I could control somewhat, to out of control sometimes. What's up with that?:-) Dano |

Azilect worked very well in concert w/my other meds for the short time I was on it - naturally, my insurance doesn't cover it. argh!

It's almost been a year on Azilect and nothing else. After about 90 days I noticed I was in a better state of mind and not so panicky. Maybe I'm on some sort of psychological plateau of accepting this disease, or maybe the Azilect is helping. Who knows... My symptoms have gotten mildly more severe on my left side. Fortunately, my right side works great.
Take care, Robert

micrographia (small handwriting) is an unfortunate effect of PD. I had it for many years. My handwriting improved dramatically after my left DBS was installed. Then it went to hell when my right side DBS was installed, along with my voice. (The dreaded ipselateral effect!)
I could probably get some relief from reprogramming, but I do not want to go through that again. My point? Don't sweat the small stuff, you will have gross symptoms soon enough. You can get around bad pensmanship with computers or simply by printing, with a slight pause between letters. I am NOT belittling your symptoms, I know how maddening they can be. I am just trying to explain a mindset that will help you in the years ahead. Charlie |

My doctor prescribed Azilect for me last week. I also take Stalevo 50 - 4x a day and have the Neupro 6 mg patch.
I took the .5 mg Azilect twice- Monday and Tuesday. Tuesday I was not feeling well and then around 5 pm got very dizzy and had to lay down when I was in the middle of giving a music lesson. I had to cancel the rest of my students for that day. After this happened I reread the food list of foods to avoid again and realized I had put grated cheddar cheese on my salad on Monday. Could that have caused the bad reaction 22 hours later? I read the other link on this forum about Azilect and people said the foods were not a problem unless you ate a large quantity. My doctor wants me to try the Azilect again, but cut the pills in half and start with half a pill for a week. He said Azilect will slow the progression of my PD. I am very nervous about taking the Azilect again. Does anyone have any suggestions? Chicory
