Is your quercitin combined with the bromelain or are they separate supplements? am ordering some for meselff!

The one that I am using is combined 100 mg bromelain plus 400 Quercetin per capsule.

Currently (2011) taking 200/50 Sinemet CR 8 times a day + 10/100 Sinemet 3 times a day. Functional 90% of waking day but fragile. Failure at exercise but still trying. Constantly experimenting. Beta blocker and ACE inhibitor at present. Currently (01/2013) taking ldopa/carbadopa 200/50 CR six times a day + 10/100 form 3 times daily. Functional 90% of day. Update 04/2013: L/C 200/50 8x; Beta Blocker; ACE Inhib; Ginger; Turmeric; Creatine; Magnesium; Potassium. Doing well.

Default Quercetin and allergies

I wonder if Parkinson's is an auto-immune dysfunction like allergies, osteoarthritis, hypoglycemea etc. It seems to me that if eat something I am allergic to, there is a coincidental failure of the optimum "on" response to the Levodopa, like maybe the immune system does not discriminate between what it experiences as toxic threat, and the drug, so the drug gets neutralized along with the allergin? Just a thought.

Quercetin is used to treat allergies, maybe that's one of the reasons it's workng for us? Thanks Rick, for bringing it to our attention. I seem to be having good results.

A month ago, I had a problem. I was losing the use of my legs. It was most noticeable at night. If I tried to get out of bed the muscles went into tetany and would not function. I was pretty maxxed out on meds. 24 mg of requip plus about 1500 mg of sinemet total in both forms. As Laura mentioned, I have been dealing with some unusual problems for a year now and it was taking that much medication to make it through. Taking something every two hours. Having to hit the bed by 8:00 PM just to avoid crawling or, worse, a total lockup.

I must interrupt myself here to explain that this is actually a two-part report with the intent of giving you as much info as possible. Now, back to the story.

I had been half-heartedly toying with an herb called scullcap for some time, but without any discipline. It has been listed in the USP years ago as a nerve tonic and it showed promise. So I began taking two capsules of 850 mg each at bedtime and it did the trick on the night time tetany, but not on the insane medication load needed to get through the day.

So, a month ago I was taking the scullcap; silymarin; and saw palmetto. The latter two had been in the picture for some time and are included for completeness. Everything else was hit-or-miss. So, as I said, there was some improvement but it was very limited.

Still trying to get a handle on the meds, a week ago I started the flavonoid quercetin and was amazed. It has just been a week and my two hour tether has lengthened to four to six hours, bedtime has gone from 8:00 PM to 10 to 11:00, and medication has dropped to 900 mg of sinemet and I'm going to start fiddling with the requip today. Those are the most awesome results that I have had from any alternative approach.

Here is a reference:

1. Pharmacology. 2003 Jun;68(2):81-8.

Quercetin potentiates L-Dopa reversal of drug-induced catalepsy in rats: possible
COMT/MAO inhibition.

Singh A, Naidu PS, Kulkarni SK.

Pharmacology Division, University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Panjab
University, Chandigarh, India.

L-Dopa plus carbidopa treatment remains the first-line therapy in Parkinson's
disease. The use of catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) and/or monoamine oxidase
(MAO) inhibitors as an adjunct to L-dopa therapy has yielded varying degrees of
success. Quercetin, a flavonoid present in many plants, is reported to inhibit
COMT and MAO activities, the key enzymes involved in the metabolism of dopamine.
In the present study we have studied the effect of quercetin on the L-dopa plus
carbidopa combination against perphenazine and reserpine-induced catalepsy in
rats. Neuroleptic-induced catalepsy is a widely accepted animal model for testing
the drugs used in parkinsonism. Catalepsy in rats was induced by administration
of perphenazine (5 mg/kg i.p.) or reserpine (2.5 mg/kg i.p.) +
alpha-methyl-P-tyrosine (200 mg/kg i.p.). Catalepsy in animals was assessed by
using the bar test. The quercetin dose (25-100 mg/kg, p.o.) dependently reversed
perphenazine- as well as reserpine-induced catalepsy. When quercetin was combined
with a subthreshold dose of L-dopa plus carbidopa, the anticatatonic effect was
potentiated. Pretreatment with a central COMT inhibitor, 3,5-dinitrocatechol
(OR-486) (10 mg/kg p.o.), or a MAO-B inhibitor, selegiline (5 mg/kg i.p.), also
potentiated the actions of threshold dose of quercetin against perphenazine- or
reserpine-induced catalepsy. On the other hand adenosine (100 mg/kg i.p.), which
is known to decrease the release of catecholamines through an action on
presynaptic A(1) receptors, partly reversed the protective effect of quercetin
against perphenazine-induced catalepsy. Quercetin through its COMT and MAO
enzyme-inhibiting properties might potentiate the anticatatonic effect of L-dopa
plus carbidopa treatment. The results of the present study strongly suggest that
quercetin could serve as an effective adjunct to L-dopa therapy in Parkinson's
disease.

I am amazed at you Rick....yes I think you are on the right track...even though using pills.
I have had such relief of night time symptoms by just up-ing my dried fermented papaya
(still not taking very much a day...about the size of 2 small cookies...flattened & dried.
Considering that the strawberries & rhubarb that we eat often have it too..I.have been getting much more quercetin than I normally do. I feel whole foods are the "ticket" with
illness.../and for maintaining health..quite worth the effort to add them to a daily regimine. God is good and truly has supplied all that we need!

Still positive effects, although I am puzzled as to why it is primarily of benefit in the evenings rather than around the clock. Unless someone else is experiencing that I am going to continue to assume a connection to my potassium problem.

A new development this morning - I actually smelled coffee brewing from the opposite side of my home. First time since I don't know when. It may be unrelated, but time will tell.

I'm taking the quercetin more consistently in the morning, and that's when I get the better effects. I have a hard time swallowing the capsules and can't always do it at noon at work, and have been so busy with visitors and family members moving that I don't always remember it in the evening.

I wonder what the "half-life" of quercetin is, does it build up in your system after awhile or do you need to keep taking it at a certain interval for it to have its best effect? With my limited experience, I would say it's lasting for maybe eight hours - really just a guess.

wendy-

Sounds like you are doing well. The contents of the caps that I am using are pretty mild tasting and would mix with a lot of concealing vehicles, so you might be able to dispense with them altogether.

As to how long it lasts, all I know is that the evening stretch when I take it with Sinemet CR is five hours (from 6 until 11 PM). That could be limited by the Qu or sinemet either one, however. One thing about the botanicals is that missing an occasional day may be to your advantage. It lets the systems "reset" in some way.

Keep us posted - Rick

Default more quercetin

Thanks for the interesting and informative thread and personal trial and error.
Is anyone using quercetin who also already uses an MAO inhibitor?
I have been taking 500 mg of quercetin for a couple of months now but have also used Selegeline for 12 years (MAO-B inhibitor 10mg/daily).
It found it hard to determine from the study if they were basically performing the same action- if this is overkill? Or do they complement each other?
In any case, I am so happy to hear that several of you are getting such great results.

yes victorialou i think this is a very good possibility that the quercitin "stacks" the requip. call it a hunch...i''m taking sinemt and fava juice only and just received my queurcitin/bromelain today - looking for fireworks anyway
