I'm tentatively planning full knee replacement surgery in the spring. I recently went through a bout of ulcerative coilis and noticed my parkinson symptoms had worsened more quickly. Can/Does unrelated surgery have an effect of progression of Parkinson symptoms. Or, in general, is there a corelation betwen other major stresses to the body and Parkinson symptoms

Hi Gerry-
Certain medications used during surgery might, ie. anesthesia/anti nausea meds. Of course, let your surgeon know about the meds you're on and if the meds used before, during and after surgery will contraindicate your PD meds. Good luck.. |

The one medication I always had to check was Reglan. This is a med that the nurses always wanted to give my husband right before surgery. It is used to prevent upset stomach caused by the anesthetic. Unfortunately, one time I did not ask what they were giving him, and he had a terrible reaction when he came out of the anesthetic. His Parkinsons was much worse, and it took several weeks before he went back to normal.
Now when they ask if he is allergic to anything, I include Reglan on that list. You would like to think the medical staff was aware of problem medications, but not all of them are, so you have to be pro-active. Don't leave anything to chance......be a pain in their backside if necessary, but make sure they know what they need to know. Hope this helps, and I'm sure you'll enjoy your new knee. I have 2 new ones, and they are great!

Generally, anti-emetics & meds to counteract nausea should be avoided when taking pd meds. I don't know what the alternative would be, but your doctor/anesthesiologist should be able to help on that.
