small recall but another reason to have a reserve of carbidopa/levodopa in case of recalls, supply chain interruption, you get a generic/refill that gives less effective results, etc.

Thanks Soccertese
The news about TEVA ‘s recall was unsettling The recall involves a relatively small number of bottles, Hopefully the word will get around , and no one becomes ill. It I was also disturbing to read later in the article that Teva will be restructuring and closing 36 of it’s plants in 5the US and and laying off about 5000 workers in the next 4-5 years. Another article stated that TEVA wants to sell less generics and more brand name drugs in the coming years I think the Parkinson’s community should be proactive and able to question TEVA about how these cutbacks might affect the availability of carbidopa /levodopa to PWP in the U.S. and around the world, A few years ago there was a shortage of Sinemet, Pwp in Europe were affected the most. There were few (if any) warnings or explanations of why the shortages occurred and how long they would last. we should be more proactive and ask Teva questions like these -- Will plans for Teva's manufacturing restructuring and downsizing reduce the supply of their generic carbidopa /levodopa? Do they expect shortages, and what can patients do to deal with possible short term and long term shortages? What other drug companies produce generic or brand name forms of sinemet. Could they step up their supply? What do PWP need to know about switching from a generic carbidopa/levodopa to another generic or to Sinemet. great example is impax labs, FDA has fined them for mfg'ing deficiencies which has delayed their new sinemet cr from being approved by at least a year.
unfortunately stockholders are forcing drug companies to raise prices and/or get out of generics and chinese/indian/etc. mfgs at times cut corners and lowball prices which speeds up the better generic mfg's to unload less profitable drugs. seems like it's only going to get worse. |
