BOSTON -- Michael J. Fox was a guest on the Oprah Winfrey show Tuesday, saying he refusing to let Parkinson's disease define who he is. He talked about his new book, and new advancements being made in Parkinson's research.
As NewsCenter 5's Heather Unruh reported, a local lab has received funding from Fox's foundation. "I'm a dad. I'm a husband. I'm an activist. I'm a writer," Michael J. Fox said, during an interview on the Oprah Winfrey show. "This is just one fact of my life. It doesn't define me." But since opening up about his struggle with Parkinson's, Fox has become the face of Parkinson's disease. He has focused his energy on finding a cure. The Michael J. Fox Foundation has funded $142 million in research. Boston University School of Medicine has received some funding. watch the video http://www.thebostonchannel.com/heal...67/detail.html perhaps? go to the oprah page http://www.oprah.com/dated/oprahshow...-michael-j-fox michael reads - from his book http://www.oprah.com/media/20090319-...-j-fox-excerpt Michael J. I watched those familiar dyskinetic movements on Oprah and again the next morning on the Regis & Kelly Show. We are definitely dancing the same dance. And Michael explained it as I also see it - you get the least bit nervous and your arms and legs start flailing. Then you start worrying about how you must look, which only makes things worse.
I agree with him about how PD helps you put things into a priority perspective. An example he gave was whenever his kids want him to see something or ask a question, he drops whatever he's doing and addresses their needs. Jaye, I know w hat you are saying about his eternal looking up attitude. If he werer to be really honest, surely he has times that he shakes his fist at the heavens and asks why? I doon't think he is normal if he doesn't. I felt sorry for the lady with dystonia on the show that couldn't stand up straigiht. And I'd sure like to know more about why some PD patients have both the PD symtoms AND painful dystonia (when others don't). Overall, I give Mike a thumbs usp, and I'm anxious to read the new book. Dr. Oz is fantastic. I think I first saw him on 60 Minutes and was very impressed. Oprah knew a good thing when she saw it and he became a regular on her show discussing health issues. I purchased two of his books on Ebay.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mehmet_Oz Funny thing about Mike's title for his new book is that I have a lot of trouble looking up, literally. My eyes don't want to go there. I love looking downwards. I hope the Oprah show is available online somewhere because I missed it.

Does anyone else find themselves doing the dyskinesia dance along with MJF without realizing it?

Mike has to keep his energy level up for all of this. He's on a roll... He is just going with who he is and portraying himself as not even pretending to be normal, so he can be as charming or obnoxious or anything comic he likes. Mike is his best IMO as a comedian. Not too many people get up and kinda fall apart I guess many would think, physically, as publically. So he just goes with the state of mind, which is strong enough for him to go on 'rescue me' with that mop of something on his head and all charming and that.....LOL.
good chuckles, it's a dark comedy, paule

Michael will be on Larry King tonight.
About dystonia, when MJF was on Inside the Actor's Studio, an audience member spoke about her dystonia. Michael mentioned that he gets dystonia in his face, and that it's very painful. He just has to wait it out (I think he said a half hour, but I'm not sure).
