I believe this tulip thing originated in Canada. I'm looking for that story that I used to have. then the EPDA (European Parkinson's Disease Association) adopted the red tulip as their symbol. I'm breaking copyright laws, but here's what it says: The tulip symbol that has been adopted both by the EPDA as it's logo, along with many Parkinson's disease organisations and groups around the world, is the Dr. James Parkinson Tulip. The story of the Parkinson tulip began in 1980 in the Netherlands when J.W.S. Van der Wereld, a Dutch horticulturalist who had PD, gave the name "Dr. James Parkinson" to the red and white tulip he had developed. In 1981 he registered his prize cultivar, the 'Dr James Parkinson' bulb. The name was chosen to honor Dr. James Parkinson, the English doctor who described the condition in his 1817 "Essay On The Shaking Palsy" and to honour the International Year of the Disabled. The Tulipa 'Doctor James Parkinson' received the Award of Merit that same year from the Royal Horticultural Society in London England, and also received the Trial Garden Award from the Royal General Bulb Growers of Holland. It is described as a flower: “exterior, glowing cardinal red, small feathered white edge, outer base whitish; inside, currant-red to turkey-red, broad feathered white edge, anthers pale yellow.” On 11 April 2005, the Red Tulip was launched as the Worldwide Symbol of Parkinson's Disease at the 9th World PD Day Conference in Luxembourg. source: http://www.epda.eu.com/worldPDDay/theRedTulip.asp OK - I just found the Canadian version: http://www.parkinson.ca/atf/cf/%7B9E...;s%20Tulip.pdf What is the Parkinson Tulip? The story of the Parkinson Tulip began in 1980 in the Netherlands when J.W.S. Van der Wereld, a Dutch horticulturalist who had Parkinson’s disease, developed a red and white tulip. In 1981, Van der Wereld named his prized cultivar, the ‘Dr. James Parkinson’ tulip, to honour the man who first described his medical condition and to honour the International Year of the Disabled. The tulip received the Award of Merit that same year from the Royal Horticultural Society in London England, and also received the Trial Garden Award from the Royal General Bulb Growers of Holland. It is described as a flower: ‘exterior, glowing cardinal red, small feathered white edge, outer base whitish; inside, currant-red to turkey-red, broad feathered white edge, anthers pale yellow’. On April 11, 2005, the Red Tulip was launched as the Worldwide Symbol of Parkinson's disease at the 9th World Parkinson’s disease Day Conference in Luxembourg. The sstories end up bwing pretty consistent. Jean - why don't you send the EPDA one of our tulips? I like it much more than theirs. Peg |

You can go to pdtulip.com -- that site lists where you can buy the pd tulip pins. It also gives the background of this particular design.
The tulip design used by the European PD Association (and the background info about it) can be found here: http://www.epda.eu.com/worldPDDay/theRedTulip.asp I didn't post sooner because I was out of town.

Just wanted to drop in on this particular thread (I read almost all the threads) and say that I love the way the green in the flower at the top of the whole PD forum stem spells out PD.
I note that the image itself is called "pd_rose" http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/images/pd_rose.gif |

the folks at NT posted the PD tulip after I sent them the graphic. It is Karen Painter's design. The fact that the person who uploaded it renamed it to pd_rose.gif doesnt matter.

Jean,
No, it doesn't matter what the graphic is named on the site at all. If you hover the mouse over the actual graphic on the site it says "Tulip". I was just pointing out an irrelevant detail as I'm sometimes prone to do. LOL I just think it's really clever design. Karen did a great job! |

The PD tulip pin is now available as a pendant as well. You can purchase one or more on-line through the APDA Midwest Chapter at www.apdamidwest.org
Pendants are $10 each, with the proceeds supporting the Chapter's education and respite care programs. sheryl |
