I bought some yerbe mate today. What should I expect and what time(s) of day are you using it?

Experimenting...drinking some whenever I feel a little off and it seems to help. Drinking about three cups a day or so. Drank one first thing in the morning, and definitely helped me get on faster. Drank one right before going to sleep, and slept like a baby. I have cut down on sinemet significantly in the last couple of days - something I ordinarily would never recommend doing at this speed -been up and down but more up than down. It's only been about four days now.

When you make it, they say moisten the leaves first with a little water, and then only add hot water, not boiling. Not above 150 degrees farenheit. I use one tablespoon per cup - add milk or lemon, honey, whatever....it's quite good that way. It makes me feel much more alert for sure, but my heart doesn't race like with coffee even. I am curious to see the effects over time. People say I look better.

Oh, but Rick and everybody, REALLY be cautious on the MAO-inhibitor thing. That means anti-depressants, Azilect, selegiline...the reason yerba matte works for us is because it is an MAO inhibitor and you don't want to be mixing those up unless you really know what you're doing....

How can one take this if they are also taking azilect? I guess we don't know what we're doing!

Here is some information:

http://www.medicinenet.com/yerba_mat...oral/page2.htm
Quote:
yerba mate (Ilex paraguayensis)-oral (cont.)

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Before using this product, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription medications you may use, especially of: theophylline, "water pills" (diuretics such as furosemide), cimetidine, certain quinolone antibiotics (e.g., ciprofloxacin, enoxacin), verapamil, stimulants (e.g., adrenaline-like drugs such as methylphenidate, pseudoephedrine). Check all medicine labels carefully, especially "diet pills" (appetite suppressants) as well as cough-and-cold preparations since many contain stimulants (e.g., phenylpropanolamine, pseudoephedrine). Ask your doctor or pharmacist about the safe use of these products. Avoid drinking large amounts of beverages containing caffeine (e.g., coffee, tea, cola).
http://www.pdrhealth.com/drugs/altme...&contentId=281
Quote:
Drug and Food Interactions:
Do not take Mate without talking to your doctor first if you are taking:

* Clozapine (Clozaril(R))
* Fluvoxamine (Luvox(R))
* Lithium (Lithonate(R), Lithobid(R))
* Medicines used for depression or Parkinson's disease (monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), examples: phenelzine (Nardil(R)), selegiline (Eldepryl(R)))
* Phenylpropanolamine
I would like to emphasize that organic green unfermented unsmoked mate is the safest.

There are alot of caffeine like compounds (xanthines) in this herb. They are absorbed more slowly and give a different response than pure caffeine. But they are still caffeine. For people with gout, they may present a problem, but I haven't seen much on that issue yet.

Mate used carefully can improve mood. It contains trace minerals that are helpful to maintaining health. In excess it will act like a laxative. But in moderation it will improve bile flow, and help digestion.

thanks, Rick - yeah, I thought it was time for a makeover.

So people that take Azilect or rasigiline, those are selective MAO-B inhibitors, as far as I can tell, and so is yerba mate. But they seem to know less about yerba mate in some ways. So I suppose the prudent thing to do is ask your doctor if he knows what would happen if you take an MAO-B inhibitor when already are taking a different one? I think you're not supposed to do that.

One more word on yerba for now....experimenting with concentrations, it definitely can take on a....shall I say....psychoactive quality? Up to you what you do with that, I guess...
